Crazy Converter

Hi All

 

I have a problem with my torque converter. My truck is a 2004 2500hd 4x4 6.0 4l80e with 59,000 miles. When engine load increases my torque converter will not unlock unless I completely lift of the gas then press the gas again. If I press the gas down more without lifting it will downshift before the converter unlocks. It will pull down to the point that it feels like a manual trans that needs to be downshifted. No codes. I am starting to remember why I used to only by manual transmission trucks.

Update,

I have also noticed that when going down the highway after the converter has locked that if I apply the brake without lifting off of the gas the converter still does not unlock. Anyone have any ideas??? Any and all would be appreciated. I am going to take it to the shop but it would be nice to know a few possible causes before I go.

sounds like it is't engaging unless you can see the tach drop 200 rpm or so after a shift,I'd have it looked at by a tranny guy,dealers do have them,good luck,excellent warrenty on GM rebuilt trannies,3yr,whatever miles(canuck here,sry)

Yes the converter is engaging, but it will not disengage(higher rpms without downshift) without lifting off of the gas and pressing it again. As far as a gm rebuilt tranny, NO WAY! This truck only has 60,000 miles on it. All service to spec. If the tranny needs rebuilt at that short of mileage, GM wont do it. If they cant do it right the first time, they are not getting a $3000-$4000 second chance on mine. No offense GMTECH4. I really appreciate your input. I took the truck to the dealer I bought it from and without even driving it or anything they said the whole tranny is shot. Of course they wanted to start on it right away. How can they tell that by just looking at the truck? I really feel for the techs at the dealers. So much knowledge(techs) with idiot service reps to deal with.Thank you again for your time and effort to help!!!!
