Why Would The Truck Die When Rolling Backwards In Gear?

Just a random question:

I was pulling into the races and stopped on a fairly steep uphill while waiting for someone to move so i could park. I let off of the brakes with the truck in Drive (may have been 3rd) and let it roll backwards a little bit (15-25 feet maybe), and then the engine died. If it matters I think i was in 4L also. Why does the truck do that? Is it a safety thing? I assume that I shouldnt do that already!

If it was a manual it would have died much earlier. Having it in 4lo causes the wheels to spin the engine very fast. If you are rolling backwards the tranny is working against the engine. So you just stalled it, just like my sister used to do with our standard-transmission car at every stop sign, back when we were kids and she was learning to drive.
