Trouble Installing New In-dash Dvd!

So I bought a display model Kenwood KVT-617DVD head unit and got it installed in my truck today. Only problem is when i turn it on i get a message that says it detects a cable that isnt connected. There are a couple wires i didnt connect because i didnt know where to connect them. The ones i didnt connect are... the blue amp turn on, the reverse wire, a yellow and a black wire that come from brain side of the wiring harness.

I was reading that you can connect the parking brake wire to a ground and it should bypass the check so you can watch a dvd no matter what, well i connected it to the ground from the wiring harness. Im not sure if that is a correct place for it but i thought it was at the time.

My questions are.. 1. What wire NOT being connected would give me this message?? I found it odd that there was another yellow wire coming from the brain harness, where does that go? theres already one coming from the head unit harness which ive connected through the harness.

2. Where would i connect the reverse wire if i have to have it?? from what i read in the manual it sounded like it was only needed if there was a backup camera which i dont have.

3. Is grounding the parking brake wire to the wiring harness ground good or bad??

leave reverse wire not hooked up

ive grounded parking break wire to the harness groudn 100s of times and never a problem

maybe a loose connection at the brain

What about the black and yellow wires at the brain end of the harness?? I would assume the black is a ground and i should have hooked that up somewhere. but isnt the yellow just another 12v? why does it need two 12v wires? does it matter if its hooked up? does the brain get power through the head unit or does it need its own power?? thanks for the help thus far!

You have to hook the yellow brain wire to 12v constant power and the black to ground. The likely reason you need two power connections (one for the HU and one for the brain) is the power draw on the brain is upwards of 10amps and this would require thicker gauge wire then is available in the DIN cable that connects the two units together.

What would be a good place to hook up the power for the brain?? Ive got a 2000 silverado 1500. the brain is located under the cup holder thingy in front of the center console. are there any power wires running anywhere close? thanks for all the help!

I have a phone kit mounted inside the center console in my 99 and I got power from the relay box on the firewall to the left of the brake pedal. If you have the radio out it's probably just as easy to run the wires to that power source.

which power source? the one to the left of the brake pedal or the one in the head unit? would it be too much of a draw from the dash having 2 things pulling power from it?

Either power source should be fine just use the one that's easier for you to run wires to. 10amps plus the HU draw is alot for a for a HU but it shouldn't be too much for the radio circuit.

Awesome. Thank you for all the help. I will give it a try when I get my truck back (getting brakes done right now). Hopefully it works, ill post back and update whether it does or doesnt.

My Panasonic strada had an extra 12v cord as well, it can be hooked up to the lighting system and automatically turn on night time mode (The only way to turn it on :P ) once the main headlights auto activate. don’t know if that could be one of them.

I just wanna say thanks for all the help! I got it all hooked up and working. i was wondering if there was any decent place to hide the brain box at?? thats my only problem now. I have a 2000 silverado ext. cab, right now its in the little cubby hole below the 2 front cup holders but now the cup holders dont fit! there is no place to put it under the seats(elec. seats), glove box, where tape player is, under the dash. the only place i can think to put it would be in the center console itself and then i have to cut holes in it to run wires and i would really like to not do that.

You can detach the glove box from the frame/Dashboard it can be mounted on the bottom of the box. That’s were my Sirius box is located. Note: I have an 05 Silverado might be a little different than yours.

My Brain(for my in dash) is small and luckily fit in my center council, and I only had to make a little notch in a trim piece that was hid by a another piece for my wires. My friend with a 05 Silvi has a kenwood with his Brain in the same place, and did not do the notching he said, he helped me install.
