02 Sonoma?

I just noticed on my 02 Sonoma with the 4.3 engine that even with the heat at full blast and turned to defrost the a/c is still on. I had the hood popped and felt of the accumulator and it was cold as can be. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? Thanks

The AC compressor runs in defrost mode to dry out the air. Without it there would be one hell of a fog session going on in damp weather. It also circulates freon and oil in the winter to keep AC system seals lubricated.
