Should I Use Tow/haul...

...when towing a 2200 lbs bass boat? i havent been using t/h and it does ok, but thought i would ask in case i'm stressing something.

Theres lots of info in the users manual regarding tow/haul, in particular if your vehicle has autoride. Here is what's in mine.

 

Tow/Haul Mode

 

Tow/Haul is designed to be most effective when the

vehicle and trailer combined weight is at least 75 percent

of the vehicle’s Gross Combination Weight Rating

(GCWR). See “Weight of the Trailer” later in this section.

Tow/Haul is most useful under the following driving

conditions:

 

 

 

• When pulling a heavy trailer or a large or heavy

 

load through rolling terrain.

 

 

 

• When pulling a heavy trailer or a large or heavy

 

load in stop and go traffic.

 

 

 

• When pulling a heavy trailer or a large or heavy

 

load in busy parking lots where improved low

 

speed control of the vehicle is desired.

 

 

Operating the vehicle in Tow/Haul when lightly loaded

or with no trailer at all will not cause damage. However,

there is no benefit to the selection of Tow/Haul when

the vehicle is unloaded. Such a selection when unloaded

may result in unpleasant engine and transmission

driving characteristics and reduced fuel economy.

Tow/Haul is recommended only when pulling a heavy

trailer or a large or heavy load.

Like he said but to answer your question, no. Use it only on hilly terrain. That light of load shouldn't tax your rig at all.

Yes!!!!

 

just got my 2000 model 2500 series back from the transmission shop, had to have the torque converter replaced.

 

I pull a 6000 # camper and always pull in 3 gear (my obs does not have tow mode) and still had to have transmission fixed.

 

my understanding that is why gm when with the tow mode, because so many transmissions were failing. People would not shift to 3 gear when towing, so they made it easier on truck by installing a tow mode.

 

Will not help, if people will not use it.

 

Just my two cents!!

 

also be sure to have transmission serviced regular. Very expensive to repair.

what about just driving in the moutains? I was just in WV the past weekend and drove to the highest elevation (Spruce Knob). I used the tow/haul mode because my tranny was shifting up and down like a mad man as my tranny temp kept clinmbing. so when i used T/H mode it did great - didn't down shift as much and tranny temp when way way down ( from close to 200 down to 130).

 

not sure if this is what T/H mode was intended for since i had no boat to tow, but just a few hundred #'s in the back. i figured dropping it into 3rd wouldnt help since i was in and out of second so much.

Doesn't T/H change the shift points to a higher RPM and actually increase line pressure some? I have noticed that the shifts are definitely firmer with T/H engaged.

 

When towing heavy loads, it's a good idea to not place the shifter in D so that the OD will not engage. Constant in and out of OD or shifting will create excessive heat in the tranny and will eventually damage the internals.

 

I also believe that the factory tranny cooler that is installed as part of the trailering package is less than adequate for towing heavy loads. Although it's a stacked plate design, a much larger cooler will help to keep the fluid temps down and thus saves the tranny.

it does change the shift point. i don't know about line pressure, but it does seem that way.

T/H mode is supposed to keep it from hunting. If the tranny is hunting you are correct that you should take it out of OD but if it doesn't then keep it in OD.

With my T/H on my rig doesn't hit OD until at least 65mph. But if I'm in hilly country pulling the boat I just leave it in 3. I hate seeing the tach at 2500 RPM going 60mph, but it keeps the tranny nice and cool and SUCKS down the gas.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
