2006 Silverado 12v Trailer Constant Problem

I'm thinking I may take it to the dealer.

It's 2 years old this month, with just over 24k on it.... still under warranty.

Still under warrenty why mess with it? You said you have the maxi fuse in. Did you put it in or are you saying there is one in there. On some trucks there is a dummy fuse in there from the factory. This would need to be replaced with a real one.

Keep us posted

I wired the trailer brake controller and installed the maxifuse myself.

I just double checked with my multimeter that the fuse is in fact good, and it is.

I think we need another start on this subject. I have a 2006 GMC 2500 6.6 Diesel and tow a 32ft 5th wheel. I have been searching forums accross the board, from trucks to trailers to campers, for the answer. I have the dual battery which does not need the maxifuse installed. I have power to everything except the 12 volt live feed. I have spent countless hours testing and searching. Every fuse in every panel is okay. Like in the Matrix, I wish I could follow the line back to where ever it originates. On the 2008's, they say the red wire is not connected, but laying below the under hood fuse box. Not in my case. I would like to get below and into the fuse box. How can I get it off? Do I need to remove the fire wall to fender bracket?

your truck might have keyed Aux power.. all of the new fords do and im not sure when GM started it.

but your truck should take a square fuse as well 30 amp. you do not have a wire under the hood.

the cover itself just pulls up from the edge closest to the motor.

Ya know I thought I was crazy. The other day I hooked up my buddies trailer to haul some stuff, and his lights didnt work. Hooked it up to his 89 dodge and they were perfect. Hooked the trailer up to his 89 Tahoe and worked just fine. What gives??

Just in case I didn't mention this before................

IIRC GM changed the trailer pin out arrangement in 03 so its

best to check your plug with a test light.

I found this out the hard way when I went from my 01 to my 04!

I think I may have it, its dark out now but in the morning I will do this... I hooked up a red wire that was folded up and taped inbetween the fender and fuse box, but I read to look harder for a thicker red wire found on the other side of the fuse box towards the back, I took a flashlight outside and I found this 2nd other thicker wire folded up and not hooked to anything so I think I may have it. There are TWO red wires floating around not hooked up! gesh...

I figured this out a while ago and just forgot the post. I have an 06 GMC 2500 Duramax with the heavy duty tow package. Along with the tow package came a separate wire set, about 3 feet long for a brake controller. On one end was a connector that plugs into the under dash fuse panel. The other end would connect to a brake controller. Taped to this wire set was a 30 amp fuse and instructions not to use the fuse with the dual battery option, which I have. So, I never thought to use the fuse.

I took the Brake Force brake controller out of my old 2000 GMC 1500 gasser. I went to Pep Boys auto store and bought the Brake Force connector that plugs right in to the under dash fuse panel on the 06 and into the back of the controller. Simple.

I just could not get power to the red wire in the seven pin for the 5th wheel trailer. I checked every wire and fuse. I check all possible posts here and elsewhere. After hours of tracing and searching down wires, testing connections from the pre-wired 5th wheel harness, located near the frame between the cab and bed, and the rear bumber 7 pin, I finally started to think like a Factory installer. I put the 30 amp fuse into the STUD #1 position in the under hood fuse panel. There are 5 fuses there in a row under a bar code sticker. I lifted the sticker on the left side, took out the dummy orange/red fuse and installed the 30 amp that was taped to the brake controller harness. PROBLEM SOLVED.

See the third post here, diagram three, for the under hood fuse panel.

I also have this same problem! 08 Silverado. I hooked my red wire up to stud number one, went and got a 40amp fuse installed it and still nothing. I am wondering.. stud 1 doesnt look like stud2, its black and I had to find a nut to fit on it to tighten down the 12v feed wire. I have the factory brake controler so stud2 is all hooked up and operating for trailer brakes. Anyone figure anything out yet? Thank you

I am going through this on my 08 Silverado that I bought last week.

The wire for the 12v lead on the trailer connector is taped up to a harness below the brake master cylinder. Once you remove the tape, it is just long enough to get to the front of the fuse box.

Remove the top of the fuse box and you will see two metal studs at the front end of the box. The stud towards the engine will have a wire already attached. The other stud (Stud #1) is black with nothing attached. You will need an M6 nut for this stud (6mm diameter). Run the red wire from under the master cylinder to this post and secure with a nut.

Now you need to install a fuse in position #68. This is a "J-Case" style of fuse and it needs to be a 40A. I looked all over at different chain parts stores and nobody has them . Apparently they are fairly new in GM vehicles so I have to head to the dealer to get one.

This link has pics of the new setup.

I also have the large red wire that is tied to a harness between the fuse box and the left fender. It has a label that says it's for a 12 accessory setup but I'm not sure what it does unless it has to do with the auxiliary battery option. With that option, the extra battery provides power to the 12v trailer connection and no wires need to be attached to Stud #1.

In any event, the wire you need is shown in the pic in the link.

HTH

The problem for me was that the wires were not hooked up at the back of the truck, so they gave me the fuse(nothing) then hooked up the wires under the hood(nothing) finally one tech figured to check the rear and voila 12v!!

I had the exact problem with my 2003 2500 HD. My 12 volt wire worked for several years and as I started on a trip this past week the lights on my cattle trailer that operated off switches wouldn't come on. Tested the plug and NO fire on the 12 volt post. Started with the fuse panel and all the fuses were good .

I traced the 12v (red) wire from the front of the truck to the rear every couple of feet. I finally arrived at the big, round connector at the rear end of the truck, located above the spare tire. The wire was hot going into the big connector but was dead on the other side. I then realized that the wire had simply broken or arched about 1/2 inch from where it exited the connector. I will simply hard wire around the connector with proper size wire and seal with shrink tubing.

Maybe this is also your issue.

    • I am having similar issues.. 08, 4.8L granted I did had a fender bender and minor damage up front passenger side but I don’t think it had anything to do with it.. I had the high and low pressure checked and my fan for my radiator keeps coming on.. replaced the pressure switch and don’t want to keep throwing parts at it. I did have some minor problems here and there like on long road trips sometimes the ac would get a little warm and then on the highway as soon as I give it a little gas or get a little heavier on the petal it started running cooler. Never had an issue with the ac besides the here and there.. but I also started having issues when I fuel up now it takes a bit to start ( super embarrassing) it runs fine and once started ( only happens after fueling up) starts fine any other time. Could they be related?
    • Spent a small fortune on fuel this weekend.   $6.69 diesel, 18 gallons of that. $6.99 92-octane ethanol free, 10 gallons of that for yard machines $5.59 87-octane for one of the cars, 11 gallons.   $250+ and I didn't even get a tug.   Hormuz ain't Hormuzin again, did not see that coming...LOL
    • Appreciate the advice. I've watched multiple videos. Most showing the most complex for those that have a center console, to one that showed maybe 2 pieces of trim being removed, like 6 screws, pulling back the screen and switch assembly, and installing the inline module. And this was a new/newer Silverado. That didn't look too bad. All the others show alot of trim pieces that need to be removed. I've broken those kind of tabs/clips on my C8 Corvette trying to get to the battery, and that was a lot less clips than what I think is involved here after watching multiple videos and looking at my dash today. I have one on the way. Called a reputable stereo place about installing it and got a "minimum" price of $175. Ouch! Looking forward to seeing what the instructions have to say.
    • Hard to say what the issue might be. Anything from the ability to cool the AC condenser up front, to blend door issues in the HVAC unit, to refrigerant charge, to compressor issues or issues in the lines.   Report back what the techs find on the 29th.   GM has service publications which list acceptable vent temperatures and AC pressures at given ambient temps and humidity. They probably won't touch the system if it's operating within those ranges.   I'm also surprised to hear your 2024 with the L8T is still using R134a? I was pretty sure the HD's had switched to the new refrigerant around 2020.
