Installed Hypertech And I Hear Pinging.

Recommended Posts

Posted

I installed the Hypertech programmer III on a 07 NBS, 5.3L. Everything was good until I hooked up to my boat and the motor started pinging.

I did double check on what i had loaded and it was the regular gas option.

I reloaded the stock engine configuration and no more pinging. What does this mean?

Any sugustions on what may be the problem?

one of 3 things.

the hypertech will adjust timing, power enrichment fueling, and power enrichment gain (or how power enrichment comes in). when you put a load on the motor it kicks the vehicle into power enrichment mode. when PE comes in, the vehicle throws in added fuel. the factory tune, for the gmt900 trucks will put the afr's into the low 11:1 afrs, or very rich, and does so very quickly. this is not good for power but keeps things nice and safe because of the extra fuel. the hypertech makes more power by slowing down the PE engagement and making it run less fuel so your afrs are closer to 13:1. this is fine when there isnt a ton of load on the vehicle, like when you are driving around town not towing. however, you add the extra load and PE doesnt come in as aggresively. this means that you are running too lean when you get on the gas.

further, timing plays a big role. more timing = more power at a given load. however, you add a trailer and the load goes up on the motor. the load goes up for the same given rpm. if the tune isnt good enough or designed for towing, it will see knock.

you have a couple options. you can either run 89/91 octane gas when towing (easiest option and a good idea for the truck) or you can send it back to hypertech and have them adjust the mapping or you can throw in your stock tune when you tow. personally i would just run better gas when towing, it wont hurt anything but $5 out of your wallet. but calling up hypertech wouldnt hurt and it might benefit people down the road because they can retune so someone doesnt hurt their motor.
