Upgrades Bose In 2008 Denali...strange Amp

Recommended Posts

I just finished a full upgrade keeping the HU. I wanted to keep the rear entertainment and rear seat audio along with steering wheel controls. Found out some interesting things about the Blose Very Happy

First, the head unit does not perform preamp functions. If you hook speakers up directly to the radio/nav outputs, the volume has no effect and neither does the fader/balance/ All preamp functions are handled in the amp strangely enough. I ended up having to install a JLAudio Cleansweep to get the amps to work properly.

I installed the following:

Alpine MRP-M500 300watt sub amp

Alpine MRP-F600 100watt x 4

JLAudio Stealthbox under the center console

Infinity Kappa 2-way in rear doors

Infinity Kappa 6.5 Components in front doors with tweets in the stock a-pillar location

JLAudio Cleansweep

JLAudio CL-SSI Summing unit (Takes the sub output from the amp and combines it with door signals to give full range to new amps

Huge improvement in sound. Haven't spent much time tuning it as I just finished it today.

The amps fit perfectly under the second row buckets

This is worthless without pics and you know it!

Yeah, I know.

Tweeters aren't much to look at but the whole point was I wanted it to be stealth. Subs under the console.

Haven't gotten around to trimming the covers around the seats yet but that will come soon enough. Also haven't installed the amp trim plates that will hide the wires.

I SHOULD have taken pics along the way but DAMN I spent a lot of time over two weekends! Crossovers are behind the door panels. The Cleansweep boxes are in the bottom of the console.

lol...You bought amps with about 1/2 a mind towards the amp itself and 1/2 a mind towards where they would fit...Didn't you?

Nice setup you got going there man :D

Damn straight I did. I had a hair less than 10 " front to back and the alpines fit the bill perfectly. Thanks for the props. Can't wait to start tuning and cranking!

Any New updates? Did you have to trim anything for the Tweeters in the Pillars? Did you splice into the speaker wire from the head unit to the clean sweep. Some other installs with OEM radio are having issues with door chime and turn signal noise being to loud as thet are being amplified? Hope you are Jamming!!

STILL have not installed the floor panels around the amps. Just can't seem to find the time.

Yes, I had to do lots of trimming. The Infinity tweeters were slightly larger than the bose so I had to trim then epoxy the tweeter holders in place. No problems after the fact though.

I taped AFTER the bose amp. WHen I tested the head unit outputs with a speaker, I got no volume control or fading as they are handled in the amp itself. I believe the head unit also only outputs two channels and the amp makes 5.1 channels. I tapped after the bose amp. My chimes are actually TOO quiet. If I want to use ONSTAR, I have to turn the volume UP to hear it and I never really hear the chimes unless the volume it up there.

Nice install!!!

I'm working on mine / planning for install this weekend. Keeping stock Nav and stock amps for chimes, camera etc. Using an Alpine PDX-5 channel amp, JL Audio stealth sub with JL W10 driver and Infinity speakers. For signal processing I have an Audio Control LC8 as it allows channel summing along with speaker level remote power on for the amp along with a remote sub volume control that was optional. Seems like many of the same brands you used.

Hope you can offer some help with the wiring regarding what color wires and where you tapped into them?

I plan to keep the stock center speaker and rear pillar speakers powered with the oem Bose amp. Will power my front mids, tweets and rear doors with the new amp and the sub too. Did you do much differently?

Hope to hear from you! There is not much out there on the net regarding making changes to the stock system so it's nice to have found this thread through google. Thanks!!!

Thanks.

I too kept the center channel and rear pillars powered by the bose amp.

HERE is a link to a page where you can download the electrical schematic. I tapped all speakers off the connectors on the bose amp. Sorry, I don't remember the colors but if I could figure it out from the schematic, you should be able to as well. It took me significant time to understand where to tap.

I think your equipment list should work out well. Good luck and pm me if you have any specific questions and I will try to help.

Thanks for the lnik, that helps a bunch. How did you tap the remote turn on for your amps? Do they remain on when the ignition is off until the doors are open or do they shut off with the ignition? I want mine to stay on like the stock system until the door is open but I'm a little worried about the audio signal sensing of the LC8. Not sure if it will work as advertised or be buggy. If I can wire the amps to an acc. power that stays on until the door is open that would be best. Any help is appreciated.

For remote turn on, I went to a key powered line above the pedals. HOWEVER, eventually I will tap into the amp power right at the amp. Now my amps shut off when I turn off the ignition while the head unit stays on and I don't like it that way.

I'll let you know what wires to tap into if I find it.

Bad news, the 12V on the Bose amp is a constant power so I'm going to use the auto signal sensing on the LC8 to power on the amps. If anyone has a good source for a power line to tap into that it turned off when the door is opened PLEASE let us know.

Also found out the that the front L/R speaker outputs on the Bose AMP are at least mid / high output. Channel summing may not be needed for at least for the mid/highs since this is the case. I'm going to sum off the sub either way just to be safe so the doors get a good 50hz signal. You can see what I mean on page 388 of that PDF file, part D-210 shows the tweeters and door speakers gettng thier singals from the same output of the amp.

Pretty much finished the installation up today. Only things left to do is wire the amp to remote turn on from the Audio Control LC8 and the remote sub level control. Was getting late and didn't want to mess with the remote turn on of the amps just in case it didn't work as advertised so the amp is wired it to a ignition switched power. Now that it's all done, it seems the LC8 will work as promised as it's is only wired for 12V and Ground and no remote power, when the doors are opened it is getting a signal from the speaker inputs as it turn on for a minute or so even if the ignition isn't turned on so that is a very good sign.

Here are some pics. Didn't have time to take one of the seat base cover with the amp cutout as it was already dark.
