Somebody Should Try This

A buddy of mine, who drives an '03 F250 Super Duty had it at the dealer one day and they were discussing gas mileage. The dealer told him to lose the bug shield, and he would get better mpg. The truck was designed, so he say's, to have aero dynamics, and installing the bug shield took away from it. He took the bug shield off, and now claims that he is getting 2 mpg more than with it on. I personally don't have a bug shield, but I would damn sure try this if I did since I'm only averaging about 12 mpg. I just thought some one could try this to see if it really works.

Sorry, I need to call BS on getting 2 mpg more. Maybe, if the truck had one of the straight vertical ones like back in the day, but not with the molded ones that fit the contours of the truck hood.

However, I will admit that GM thinks something of this being that they state the bug/rock protector is not to be used with hybrid Yukon.

I tend to agree with you D&S. That's why I thought if we could get someone to try this, I could defunk his story. My buddy is always pulling this shit on me, because he is Ford, and I'm Chevy. :D

I put one on my truck and watch my mileage with every fill-up and have not noticed a difference. Actually, my mileage increased from an average 16.4 mpg when before installed to an average of 18.7 since installed. I account for the increase due to spring, warmer temperatures, and the engine still breaking in (just under 10,000 miles right now).

I never really paid attention to a mileage penalty in the past when I had a couple on trucks, but they do change the aerodynamics.

Had one on a Ford Ranger and it would push the side mirrors (yes they were crappy side mirrors) down on the freeway. Had another one on a GMC S-15 and the hood would vibrate like crazy at the hinges. In both cases, we took them off.

I think VMax2007 should permanantly give this a try and let us know how it works... you know, for the team!

:D:confused: I can't wait to hear his remarks on this one. I can almost hear him now.

Don't know about 2 mpg...but those deflectors sure do mess with the mirrors and windshield moldings so they sure are not helping mileage.

Maybe even an oversized chrome one.

Come on Jeff!

So, let's hear what you are "almost hearing now"? I'll let you know how close you are.

I'll have to find out later. I have to go to a cook out. So long.

But is taking it off worth leaving the hood vulnerable to rocks and crap hitting it?

I'm getting close to 18mpg with my bug shield on so I seriously doubt I could see much better without.
