Tried To Level My Truck

i tried to get some more height out of the front of my truck by tightening the torsion bars and it didnt do anything to the height of the truck. i have them tightened pretty far(probably farther than they should be) and the truck looks like its sitting the same as before. my truck is a 03 GM 1500HD, should i put a leveling kit onto it? i bought some keys off ebay but it they said it was for a 2500HD will these work on my truck? i havent be able to find anything specifically for a 1500HD yet. what should i do?

Cranking the stock keys should have definitely gotten you some extra height.

From your description, it sounds like you didn't jack the truck up when you adjusted the bolts... If you didn't, jack up the front end, and try again.

Yeah I hoped you jacked the truck up first with the wheels off the ground as he said. Doing this takes the stress off the adjustment bolt threads as you may have stripped them if you didnt.

I cranked my old '95 but you have to jack the front off the ground first, hope you didn't mess anything up. Oh, and it really messes up the ride

i did jack it up and get the wheels off the ground before doing it..... so no problem there. also it did roughen the ride some.... how far from the frame should the head of the bolt be before you start stressing things to much? do you guys think the keys i bought will work should put them on? is there anything else i need to use the keys?

Depends. How many revolutions did you turn the bolts from where you started?

To put the new keys in, you will need the torsion key tool which allows you to remove the key safely. If you don't have this tool, you won't be able to release the tension on the torsion bars enough and this is a great way to hurt yourself.

i turned the bolt in at least 3 revolutions.. 1 the first time and them another two after that. as far as putting the keys in "I" personally wont be doing it. i have a family friend that is a mechanic that i will be having help me if he has the tools to do it.

IIRC 3 turns is only worth about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Give it some more turns before swapping out the keys. Then head to the alignment shop.

Turning the stock keys up will get you the same effect that a different indexed key will. Just turn yours up some more before you waste your money on different keys.

I think the keys you bought might not help you. Just hold they up to the stock ones and see how the index of the hex is off.

But before you try swapping them out turn your stock keys up more. On my 03 Silverado I had them almost bottomed out to make mine level and it still drove fine.
