Molded Gm Splash Guards - Impossible To Install Fronts

- Molded GM Splash Guards w/o Fender Flares -

 

The Rears (GM Part # 12495825) were easy to install, but the Fronts (12495824) won't go on. Step 4 says "Place rubber spacer over bolt between the guard and fender bottom". Worst part is, the hex bolt is barely long enough without the spacer.

 

I want to follow the directions by using the spacer so I don't have any body-rub, but how the heck do I get these on? I've tried to jack a floor-jack against the bolt to give it some tension and compact the rubber spacer a little bit. That did not work!

 

I've used every swear word in the book, I had to stop before something I broke something.

 

Has anyone installed these on their GMT 800 truck? Any success? Tips? Similar frustration?

 

This could be an interesting topic, who knew Molded Splash Guards were so difficult to install!

Only thing I can think of is try to get a longer bolt if you're sure you're doing everything else right...

Step 1- go to hard ware store, get longer screw

 

Step 2- replace screw that is too short with longer screw.

 

Had the same problem on my 05. Above instructions worked perfectly.

My bolt is about 2" long from the top of the bolt head to the tip of the threads. I used bolt, washer, mudflap, rubber spacer, fender and then the nut. No issues. I didn't need to replace the bolt.

I did this on my '06 Silverado shortly after I bought it. If I remember correctly, GM in their infinite wisdom, tells you in the instructions to place a square nylon insert in the round hole. Like it is not going to turn when you try to crew in the screw! I ended up using the original fender flare push pins which they told you to remove to mount the splash guards. This worked really well.

What his problem is there is one metal screw on each side. When you add the thickness of the splash guard, the screw is not long enough to get started in the clip nut.

You are correct Don. The GM hex bolt is 1 inch long, which is about a 1/4" too short when adding the thickness of the rubber spacer. I took your suggestion, went to the hardware store, bought 2 - 1 1/2" hex bolts with thread-locking nuts, with a couple of washers this gave me the right amount of clearance I need to get everything tightened properly.
