Fuel Gauge

I have read about fuel gauge problems but have not read anything about this problem. Gauge reads no lower than 3/4 tank. When I fill it up it will go to full tank but will never go below 3/4 tank. I suspect it is the same problem that others have had namely the fuel tank sender. What do you think?

I think you should be damn happy that you have a never-ending tank of fuel!

Seriously though. I'd think it's probably the sending unit.

Think real hard now. Do you remember ever picking up an antique looking bottle on the beach and rubbing it? :D

Sorry, that was cruel. It's probably drop the tank time.

Mine is acting up too, full tank reads empty until I shake the truck, and doesn't seem to accurate anymore. Recommendations on where to get a new sending unit, is that the part name? Dropping the tank can't involve too much, can it? I replaced pumps in other vehicles, never my 2001 Sierra.

David, try at least one 20 oz bottle of Chevron's Techron in it before you buy the sender. In many cases it will clean the contacts and cure the problem. If it doesn't, you have spent $10.00 and have a clean intake system.

Be sure and get the concentrate, I think the # is 65740.

Giving that a try, I have a full tank and the truck will sit all week. I drove it around to shake it up and the gauge is acting better. It acted a little better after I cleaned all 3 ground points because of the ABS/Brake light issue (which seems to have cleared up). Hopefully your recommendation will work, it would drop to empty when I sat still, and then after moving back to full, and I won't have to drop the tank.

We sell a good bit of it because it is one of the best injector and combustion chamber cleaners ever made. Just recently did they begin advertising that it would clean fuel gauge sensors.

Hope it works
