Yet Another Nbs Trans Cooler Upgrade

So I installed the Hayden 679 (Carquest 77423) today. There have been a couple members who have done this, and I appreciate thier input. I went ahead mounted mine right to the A/C condensor after considering all the factors. My climate isn't nearly as harsh as those summer months down south, so mounting behind the front support will be fine for me. Also, I wanted the most direct plumbing route I could get for the lines.

Removed grille and top cap, took advantage of the opportunity to steam out some of Alaska's critters:

Removed OEM cooler and mounting brackets:

Mounted new cooler and routed hoses, very wide angles and good routing at this location:

Double clamped lines and secured:

I covered the lines in nylon split loom, and made it look good (covered up the clamps on the hoses). I am not a big fan of the plastic zip mounts, but I have installed many of them over the years on customer equipment and never had any issues.

It will be nice to see this weekend, if I can keep it below the 200* I was running in the mountains while pulling the travel trailer.

You sure do love you some tranny. :D

Nahhh...Trannys are Jeff's fetish! I just don't like walkin' out of the mountains :D

The installation looks nice and clean. Just out of curiosity - why did you mount it in the center of the condenser? The reason I put mine in the upper left corner was to keep as much surface area as possible exposed directly to incoming air. When the fans are on, it doesn't matter much, but at speed, when the fans are off, I would think that anything in front of the cooler would hinder air flow. It probably doesn't matter that much given your location, but I was going for the maximum effectiveness due to the climate in Florida.

Again, looks nice and clean. Hopefully this will inspire more people to do their own installations now that a few members have shown how easy it is.

Yeah, I debated, and truthfully I probably bought too much cooler for my ambients. I went for the best position for routing the hoses in the end.

I had 3 different spost picked out, and damn near went back to the store and bought the 9 incher to install in the stock location.

I will give this a shot, and see how it does. I may do something different, you never know!

Riggs, it gets 65-70 around here at the most. 80 up in Fairbanks. It's the towing of the 6000+ lb trailer in the mountains that gets the temp up.

Looks really good. I have heard of very few problems with tie mounts. I think as long as you use the foam pads and pull the ties good and tight, you will neve have any problems. I have used them on 5 Dodge Carvans and never had an issue.

You likely to have more cooler than you need but if it runs too cool in the winter, cover part of it up.

Trey,

It is likely too much, that is why I didn't sweat mounting it behind the support. I will find out Thursday night. I got the AirLifts on tonight, and this will be my heaviest trip so far with this truck...hope are high!

I have always overcooled my trannys, and run a full synthetic and never had any issues in the winter. If she never warms up, I will cover part of it.

Thanks for all the input!

Let us know, because this Thursday will be my furthest, not heaviest, but I've been (so Called) runnin hot for a while. I don't have enough time to add anything till next week.

One thing I do live by though is C H E V R O L E T Can Haul Everything Very Readily Overloaded Every Time! Even if it has to! :chevy::lol:
