Front Hub Going Out...again!

Well I have a nice mess in my wheel well. The hub assembly I replaced last year is slinging grease in the wheel well and is now starting to groan a little in turns. Needless to say I'm kind of irritated, I guess I have no choice but to spend ANOTHER couple of hundred bucks for a new part AGAIN and hope it lasts more than a year.

Well that bites. Are you using an OEM assembly of aftermarket? I only had to replace one on my 2001 Silverado in 100K miles and that was due to a technician screwing it up when I did my lift. I know they di fail but one year is way too often.

I used a timken assembly, I found online cheaper than dealer. I'm kinda thinking about getting a dealer part this time...get what you pay for, but I really don't want to pay the OUTRAGIOUS price they are asking.

I've had mixed results with Timken units. the first one I replaced lasted for the duration of owning the truck. the next one I purchased for my ZR2 that I had back in 2001 lasted only 30K...........however I offroaded my truck quite a bit and my alignment was off due to worn out ball joints.

 

if you create stress on the hubs by having worn out components then they will fail prematurely.

My driving conditions are normal, don't really off road any and the roads aren't great but not bad enough that will make my hub go out in less than 12,000 miles.

Are you sure it's the wheel bearing and not the C.V. joint? Never seen a wheel bearing sling grease when it's worn out.

I was going to say the same thing but he referenced the groan or "roar" as I like to call it which is typical of a hub assembly going out.

It's not the CV, I've taken the wheel off and looked at everything and the CV boot is good to go. It is starting to make the same noise it did when the first one went out...but the first one didn't sling grease so my guess is that the part I got has a defective seal.

What side of the truck? If it's not greenish looking grease, than it is not a torn CV boot.

Front/Right Axle seals are notorious for going bad. 17.00 bucks. Check front axle fluid level. Could also be the bearing if to LOW on right side

Timkin is no bargain if it only goes 12K before taking a crap! I'd hunt a discount deal on an OEM replacement. I bet they are available online.

What kind of noise does a bearing make when it starts to go. When I am on the highway I have a humming noise that I think is my uneven tire wear. They are bridgestone dualers that have some inner tire wear.

To check to see if your wheel bearing's bad, jack up the front of the truck, grab the tire at 12 and 6, and wiggle back and forth. If you feel any play, and it's not in the ball joints, your wheel bearing/hub assembly is shot.
