2000 Escalade Shakes At 70

My 2000 Escalade (think 1999 and older Tahoe/Yukon/Denali) gets a violent shake that appears to be in the front and transmitted into the steering wheel...

...it only happens at 70MPH and gets worse the faster you go...I have only taken it to 80MPH...When you decelerate, the shake stays until under 70MPH...

A check of the front end shows that everything appears to be tight with no play...my truck has just under 60,000 miles...

I have had it to my mechanic and the tires and wheels were re-balanced as well as something in the drive shaft replaced (U joint) as it was binding but no change as he thought that might have been it...

I cannot say for sure if this just started as even though I have had this truck since last November, I have rarely had it to 70MPH since I do mostly City driving with it...

I believe it has original shocks (Bilsteins that look good) but I replaced the 16" wheels and tires with 18" Cadillac take offs with Bridgestone tires...they are as new.

Any ideas???

Tires could be out of round. Even then, they can still be balanced.

same thing john said, check the road force of the tires, balance em, make sure the brakes are not sticking and nothing is loose on the suspension.

I will check that but these guys I have used for 25 years and they caught the out of round tires on another vehicle of mine...still, thanks for the insight...

Have you checked the ball joints, tie rods and wheel bearings for any play?

If it is AWD triple check the front half-shafts (CV-Joints) for any play (grab the half shaft close to the inner and outer cv joint and see if you can move it at all. Carefully inspect the CV boots. If any are torn, most likely you need a new CV joint. The grease will excape through the boot then water and road grime gets in and destroys the cv joint. Find an empty parking lot and do some tight full lock left and right turns. Do your hear any clunking or clicking? Do you hear a clunk when you put it in drive or reverse at idle. (may have to have someone listen outside of the vehicle.

I crawled under it this morning...I did not have it on a lift but I could find no play in anything and the CV boots all look good...no grease leakage...I think there is something going on in the front end though as it seems to feel really crappy when driving over really broken pavement or railroad tracks...I mean worse than usual...I have an appointment on Monday to get it looked at again...thanks for the responses...it has been helpful and I keep learning so that's a plus!...

mine is a true 4WD not AWD (transfer case and low gears)...I will check the turns lock to lock...no clunk when putting into reverse...thanks,

no clunk when putting into reverse...no noises or binding when turning front wheel lock to lock...I found a minor discrepancy in the air pressure (a couple of pounds difference) but I don't think that is it...I'll keep looking...

Thanks,

When did the shaking start?

Right after the change to 18" wheels? was the new tires at the same time?

If it was a fair amount of time, 1000 miles or so, after the wheel/tires then it could be the shocks. At a certain spring travel rate the shocks could start to "oscillate" different from the springs and violate shaking results. Going to slightly more extreme to that is that the front bearing hubs is just starting to loosen up as well and it all exagerrates itself at speed.

thanks...you really think it could be shocks???...I have been thinking that myself...I believe Bilstein's shouldn't do this at 60K miles but...I don't know the care they had from the previous owner although it appears they took decent care of it...

I just noticed it but the wheels and tires were replaced about 3K miles ago...I just don't get the truck on the highway much and not to 70mph...

Thanks,

alright...went to my trusted mechanics and they put my truck up on the lift for me and put all four wheels into motion...my right front tire has a hop in it...not in the wheel...in the tire...and the other three have varying degrees of wobble...in the tires and not the wheels...I need 4 new tires it seems.

I bought these as take offs on ebay so as I am not the first owner, I have no warranty with Bridgestone...lovely...

Does this sound plausible for the front end shake at 70MPH...?

Anyone have some suggestions for an all season tire in 285 60 18 for the Esky...mostly road driven rarely if ever taken off road but must be able to handle Winter and Rain...

wunnnerful...

Thanks for all the help so far...

road force balance ($100 bux at Discount Tire) and they found one tire out of balance...problem is still there but yet again lessened...change to new Bilstein's today...I can report back but not much of a change...here is the response on another thread:

well, my new Bilstein's were installed and the early returns are: My 60K Bilstein's were probably not dead (of course I didn't think they were yet)...not by a long shot...the ride is firm but not too much different so far than the GM spec'd Bilstein's that came with the Cadillac smooth ride option...the Bilstein's I had put on are the Heavy Dutys...

I saved a bit with free shipping and the 10% off coupon...

Yes, that sounds plausible. Typically it would be the tire that goes bad, especially if you bought them used. Most used tires I've seen have SOMETHING wrong with them.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
