$300 For Performance Exhaust Installation?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Does this sound right? My dealership wants to charge me $300 to install a GM Performance Exhaust in my 08 Silverado (I already have the part). I am pretty sure I have seen other posts where the dealer did it for $60. What do you all think? Is the reasonable?

If this is as ridiculous as I think it is, how can I get them to come down on the cost?

They want to charge u 300 dollars just for installation? If they want to charge u that, that is way too much. When I put a flowmaster 40 series muffler on my 2006 Silverado at a muffler shop they charged me 20 dollars to install it.

Why not just install it yourself? I've heard that it's not that difficult.

Unfortunately, they are the only game in town.

Well, I guess I'll just ever so gentley insert my foot into my mouth.

Honestly though, you might want to try installing it yourself. After I had mine installed and I crawled underneath to check it out.....I realized that I could have done it myself. I certainly wouldn't pay $300. The going rate for labor around here is about $95/hr, and I can't imagine that it would take experienced person longer than 2 hours to install (and I think that is being very conservative).

Doesn't the computer have to be reset after the installation? I read that on the boards here also.

OK, you got me on that one. I've never heard of that, but that doesn't mean its not true. I think I've exceeded my usefulness, hopefully someone else will chime in on this and help you out.

I think I also remember reading that somewhere but am confused as to why it would need to be reset.

Do it yourself... Its very easy.

I can't say for certainty about the GMPP exhaust, but the Magnaflow exhaust I just installed only took me about an hour (most of that was removing the old exhaust).

All you have to do to reset the computer is just disconnect the negative battery terminal while you install it. Simple as that.

Save yourself the $300 and get a custom tune.

First choice should be to try and install it yourself.

If that's not an option, or you just don't feel comfortable trying it, see if there are any muffler shops (midas, muffler man, tuffy muffler, etc) that will do it. I'm guessing $100 labor would be the most you'll pay there.

For $300 you can get a tune or an intake to match the exhaust

I would just look around for a muffler shop and get them to install it there for a cheaper price. Yeah, custom tune FTW.

Thanks for the advice. I got a quote from a muffler shop for $100, and I may be able to bring the dealership down to $125. If I take it to a muffler shop instead of the dealership, will most be aware that they need to reset the ECM, or is that something they probably wont be aware of and I will have to take care of on my own.
