Radios Compatible Between Different Years?

Here's my situation. My cd died in my 2003 Sierra. I picked up a new cd w/MP3 that came out of a 2004 model. Installed it and it came up Locked when I hit the ignition (no surprise, I expected this). What I did not expect was that my dealer told me that the radios cannot be swapped out from different year vehicles???!! They have to have the exact same part number as the one you are changing out. I know the radio works in the truck. When you first plug it in, it works and plays cds as long as you don't turn the ign on. Is this the case, or can this radio be unlocked? If so, is there a procedure for it that I can take to them?

Thanks...

Find another dealer. I have a 2007 classic radio in my 2005. The part numbers are different. The dealer has to program the new radio to your VIN. The local chevy dealer charged me $36 plus tax. Works great. And you do not need the vin the new radio was previously programed to.

I asked them about that. They told me that the radio would have to be 2003 or older to work in my truck. They said there was something different with the 04's and newer. I have also heard now that some things in the truck wouldn't work (DRL's, keyless entry, etc) if this radio was installed and able to be unlocked. Can't believe that GM doesn't have a clue on this. I also contacted another dealer and they were supposed to check into it and get back to me. Still haven't heard a thing..

Does anyone have a step by step that I can take to the dealer for them to try and unlock this?

Thanks..

Is there anywhere else I can look that I might find an answer to this? Anyone?
