Front Driveshaft Removal

I would like to change the transmission fluid/filter on my 2005 Yukon XL, 1500 4x4. It has a little over 25K miles on it now.

Ran into the problem with the shift linkage bracket that is in the way to drop the pan.

I can get the rear torx bolt but not the front. Will removing the front driveshaft make it much easier to get the front bolt on the linkage ?

What is the procedure to get the front drive shaft out ? I did undo the u-bolts but it would not budge. I assume some pounding might be required.

Is it necessary to pull the shaft out of the transfer case, or can it just be left in.

Any details on how to get the driveshaft out of the way to get the pan dropped will be greatly appreciated. It is so simple on my old 1988 Suburban, it is frustrating that it is so difficult on the 2005.

Once you have the 4 bolts out of the front of the drive shaft, take a pry bar or large screw driver and slip it between the u-joint and the yoke....you should be able to pop it out...dont beat on it...you can just let it hang off to the side once you drop the front of the shaft.......that will give you enough room to drop the pan.

+1

It will allow for you to bend the shift bracket further out of the way. When you get the pan back on and the driveshaft bolt back on the you can take the pry and bend the shift bracket back into place by prying against the front drive shaft and the shift arm.
