Turbo Chargers

The Dmax is my first Diesel with a turbo. I had heard in past years that the turbos on the 6.5 had problems with the bearings. They were cooking in the oil because the owners weren't letting the engine idle for a minute or two to cool the oil before shutting down the engine.

Is this true? Should I be doing this with the Dmax as well?

I always have been in the habit of idling for a minute or two after a hard highway run. Any thoughts on this?

I've never owned a vehicle with a turbo, but I've always heard that you are suppose to let them idle for a little bit for the same reason you mentioned.

You definately need to let the turbo cool down before shutting the truck down.  This is very important when you have been towing, as the turbo will get very hot when make a hard pull.  A minute or two is probably adequate for in town, but upwards of 5 minutes may be necessary when shutting down after a hard pull.

You really need to get a pyrometer installed for that very reason.  While you are stock the EGT's won't reach dangerous levels, but it is a great tool to determine when to shut down.

Not trying to flood the thread but yes you should let your turbo cool off a little. It works off of the exhaust which adds hot air to the charger and it gets warm on its own working to add power your engine.

If you are empty, and running around town, you need about 30 seconds of cooldown.if you just pulled off the interstate into a rest area with a 35 ft 5 thwheel, you need up to 4 minutes of idle time.Any load in between will need a time in between. This is what i found on my Dodge /cummins.I had a pyro, and wouldnt shut down until it hit 300 or less.
