07 Yd Gas Mileage: Who Needs Hydrogen?

Last tank of gas on the YD, 19.5 mpg with ~60:40 high-to-city split. :dunno: For those unfamilar, that's almost 20 mpg with 5000+ lbs truck and a 6.2 Lt with 6-speed transmission under the hood.

Suck on that "Brown's Gas"!!! :D

I've never understood the wide variation in mileage. When I first purchased my '97 K1500 5.7L 4x4, I got about 22mpg highway/ 18mpg city. I traveled highway a lot, through the Colorado mountains and Nebraska plains and mileage never varied much between 20-22mpg.

My friends driving Fords with smaller engines could hardly believe it, and several other people with identical Silverados didn't get near the mileage I was getting.

Of course now, with 350,000 miles, it doesn't get near the mileage it used to, but I'm just happy it is still running strong :dunno: 4 tranny's later, but the same motor that has hardly been touched.

I believe 2 things are the primary contributors to MPG. Tire pres and driving style. I am sure there are other factors that help MPG but these 2 by far have the biggest impact.

My 02 Yuk XL with 4.10 gears with pure intersate driving will get me about 19.4, 60 mph or less on 2 lane or 4 lane roads will get me 21 to 22. Combine all this with some moving around town and my avg for my last 9 fill ups is running 19.45.

I recently tuned it with a Hypertech Max Energy and before this my mpg had consistently averaged 18.4.

I am happy with anything in this range on a truck this size that will tug around my 6500 lb camper when I ask it to.

I recently took a trip from Fairbanks AK, to Anchorage AK, 360 miles each way, with a mix of hills and flat areas and my speed was set at 65 with the cruise control. My mileage was 19.7 mpg each way, around town I get around 16-17.

Thats some pretty good mile there D&S. I actually stopped checking/paying attn. It makes me feel better NOT to know, haha. I ride my Harley a lot so with it gettin 35-45mpg, I tend not to care what the truck nets.

If you average the Harley and the Truck, that's 30mpg+!

What I think is helping also is all the road construction right now. With the road barricades up, lanes a little narrower, no real shoulder, and surrounding traffic pressed a little closer, wind resistance on the vehicle gets cut dramatically; I can feel it in the pedal. That, and now when I know when I'm going to be cruising at a constant speed for a bit, I kick down into M6 so it does not downshift into on minor grade changes.
