New Member With Problems

Hi all, I am a 2001 silverado 1500 owner. She has 120k and I started hearing this grinding sound in the front end. It is not a bad grinding sound but concerns me of course. The abs light came on as well. I did however go off after shutting the truck on and off. It sdoesnt seem to affect braking or pulling to one side or the other. It also is not constant. It does go away. I was just wondering to get some suggestions before I have to bring it somewhere and struggle with the problem that wont happen when my mechanic brings it for a spin. This problem started happening after a 700 mile trip from NY to IN. I did make it home but now I am broke and in trouble!!

Does it get worse when you turn in a particular direction? If so, it may be a wheel bearing/hub assembly.

Also, is the truck a 2wd or 4wd?

I do notice a slight difference in the noise when iI turn left more than right. It is infact a 4X4. I also thought whell bearing but I dont understand the ABS light coming on. Now I have driven it for a few mioes after my trip and the abs light has not come back on.

Not sure about the ABS light, but it definitely sounds like your wheel bearing/hub assembly is bad. To be sure, jack the front of the truck up and put the frame on jackstands. Then grab each front tire at 12 and 6 o'clock (obviously one wheel at a time ) and try to wiggle it back and forth. If there is any play (and it is not coming from the ball joints), your hub assembly is shot.

+1 on the wheel bearing... not at all unusual at 120K.
