How do you guys think these would look on my truck?

Here's my truck (well, as of six months ago):

Picturing it in my head they would look quite nice, but I wanted to see what you guys thought.

If you are getting new, more aggressive tires, those will look fine. If you are keeping the same tires, stick with the stockers. IMO.

Are the offsets compatible? What year are those wheels from?

I would put the LTX M/S tires on there for now and put on BFGoodrich A/Ts once they wear out. They were used on the first four-door Tahoe Z71s, I think from '99-00. From what I've found, the size and bolt spacing are identical to the regular 4WD wheels like what I already have. Considering they were mounted on the same generation Tahoe Z71s as my truck, I'm assuming the offsets are the same.

Here is omegafilter's old Tahoe Z71 with BFG A/Ts, that's what the wheels are from:

How long before the LTX's wear out? IMO, you are going to need the aggressiveness of an A/T to pull that look off. They look great wrapped in BFG's though.

Those are the Alcoa wheels from the Z71 Tahoe. They have a pretty severe positive offset. I think I'd try one on to make sure but they look really good.

What would the side effects be besides them possibly looking weird? I'd definitely get an alignment done. Did GM put on some type of spacer so that they looked right, or was the hub used different from the regular 4WD hub?

The LTX M/Ss have quite a bit of life left in them, IMO. I'd most definitely put them on black wall out with those wheels (they came white wall out when I bought the truck, I just don't care enough to flip them), so that'd help a bit. What tires came stock on the Tahoe Z71s of that generation?

I don't know if I'll be buying these very soon, but I think I'd like to get them sometime down the line, at least if I could find them for a cheap price. I found a guy on FSC selling a set for really cheap, although his thread was over a year old. I PMed him last night to ask about them since they still hadn't been sold as of the last post in his thread.

EDIT: Just checked my PMs, and they had been sold. I guess it'll be a while before I get a set.

That sucks that they sold! Did a little checking and it looks like they will fit on your truck without hitting anything. I think they have about 10mm more offset which isn't too bad but they would be a small amount further inside than your existing wheels. (should you find another set that is)

Yeah, well it had been over a year. There's a set on eBay for $400 shipped, which too unreasonable (is it?), but it seems like people sell off their factory wheels for a bit less than that. The guy on FSC was selling them for $100 plus shipping. He said they had a few scratches, but even then that's quite a steal! I guess I could just get spacers for them if necessary. I plan on getting 285/75-16 BFG A/Ts for my next set of tires, so if I were to mount those on the Tahoe Z71 wheels a spacer would probably be necessary. I suppose I'll just wait until I need new tires before looking into wheels, anyway. A Black Bear tune and Line-X bed liner are in front of these wheels in line unless I can find another $100 set!

check on craigslist !

A lot of yahoos are putting 24 and 26 inch rims on their Yukons, Tahoes, etc and selling the good factory wheels/tires cheap.

I doubt I'd have much luck around here, as the GMT400 Tahoe Z71s are rare enough as it is. The GMT800s are another story, though. My friend's Tahoe Z71 is one of AT LEAST three white Tahoe Z71s (not counting Suburban Z71s) in our neighborhood. My neighbor across the street has a black one, too. They're more common than the regular models. I suppose I'll at least take a look, though. There was a set on eBay for $400 shipped for the set of wheels only, but even at that low price, I'd like to spend less. :dunno:

Well, sorry to bump up an old thread, but I finally found some and am picking them up Sunday. I'm paying $250 for the set and they come with all of the caps and lug nuts (though I'll need some new lug nut caps since a few are cracked), plus 305/75-16 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM tires with null tread ("20%"). The wheels are in great shape, too, and they're just over a mile from my house! Having patience as well as putting off homework pays off!

So, back to the offset issue: does anyone know for sure that the offset is much different than my current wheels. I doesn't seem like it'd be that much since the regular 4WD Tahoes came with the wheels I currently have, and I strongly doubt the Z71 Tahoes' suspension components are any different except for the shocks.

Oh, and should I run whitewalls in or out? I guess I was pretty sure on whitewalls in back when I made this, but I'm undecided now.

    • Welcome back! No, it definitely doesn't pass the sniff test. Even "ceasefire" needs an alternative definition these days.    $5.29 at Kroger today
    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
