"normal" Oil Pressure On 5.3l Gmt 900

I noticed that my 2008 Silverado reads lower than my 2000 did, so I'm wondering if that's just how the new ones read, or if mine is low.

 

What does everyone have for oil pressure on their GMT900 5.3L?

When hot (at idle) the pressure drops prety low but since the gage doesn't give any REAL numbers for pressure, it would be impossible to compare the two. It's more of a pressure indicator than an accurate gage. Every GM truck I've had was different.

7psi at idle is sufficient.

My 2000 Silverado 5.3L oil pressure never feel below 40psi since new at idle. My new 2008 Silverado 5.3L is about 30psi at idle. Maybe its the difference in gauges...who knows. I havent checked either engine with a stand alone calibrated pressure gauge connecting right to the engine to get a true unbiased reading.

Might also have to do with the fact that newer trucks run on thinner oils. 5w20 and 0w20 oils were unheard of in earlier truck days! Gages are hardly accurate to the pound either, so it's hard to know exactly what the pressure is. 30 psi is well above the minimum pressure needed to insure no engine damage.

 

A good rule of thumb is to get to know the characteristics of your particular truck and just keep an eye out for anything out of the norm for it.

I average at 275 kPa (39 psi), but of course this rises and falls with engine speed. Unfortunately the pressure gauge only shows a few numbers and so to get an accurate pressure off it is impossible.
