Those With A 08 Sierra W/ Nav

Those that have an 08 GMC Sierra (1500) with factory nav and no rear dvd, if you press the voice button on the steering wheel control, does your voice recognition work? I'm referring to the nav radio. Mine times out saying no voice detected. It doesn't even activate the onstar. It says in the books that this should work. Onstar and hands free phone via mirror buttons work just fine.

Dealer had truck for a week and finally said that GM tells them it is only for Denali's.

Doesn't make sense being that the system prompts for voice command. Seems like wire isn't connected to the mic.

Anyone?

I was trying to set this up in my 07. I can add voice tags, but cannot get the system to respond to a voice request.

Well I haven't read the manual but waas able to get some response from the Nav unit. Once I had entered a recognizble voice tag to a destination in the address book... I did these things...

Press and hold the Voice activation button...

Say " Destination, Select, (Voice Tag)"

Being that I had requested the " Go Home " Voice tag for my home and was allready off the "paved road" The nav unit told me there was no disc inserted.Which I took as a generic response for the data on the disc did not include the neighborhood I was in. So I think this feature is working just fine on my 07.

Gristlehead,

The manual also says you can use it to change the radio "radio FM ...." or "xm 3". Does that work for you?

Mine obviously is not hooked to a mic. I guess since the dealer can't think outside the box and tab to the mic, I'll have to do it myself. Just need to figure out which wire on the nav is the mic and which wire on the onstar module goes to the mic. Also to locate the onstar module.

Yes I changed the radio station 3 times yesterday using it... Now beware, with my southern drawl I ussually have to change the station 3 or 4 times to get the right station...98.9 FM was 1149 AM, 98.5 FM, etc....

did your truck come with navi? I just put the factory system into mine and have the same problem. found out that i need a harness the runs from the back of the connecter on the head unit to the on vcim (onstar box). Now the help i need is where is the onstar box in a new body silverado? found the xm but looked everywhere for onstar.

I've got an 08 Silverado with the Nav. If you hold the mute button on the wheel until you hear a beep, then say "Onstar", that will get you into your onstar and then you can say dial or call etc, which works really well. I've never used voice recognition with the Nav portion. Changing radio stations is kinda hit and miss.

My nav was added by the dealer when I purchased the vehicle, since couldn't find one from factory with the options and color I wanted.

The dealer had the vehicle for 12 days after two separate trips. I kept telling them it was a simple wire connection not being made. They gave up trying to fix it the first time and said they had to get back to me. Samething second time. This after begging them to let me look at the paper work. Finally manager called and wanted me to bring it back and they were gonna order another radio. I finally convinced them to let me go back with the tech for 10 minutes. I looked over the setup and papers and sure enough, those two wires that run from the onstar vcim weren't there. I pointed this out and told him to make a jumper. The tech was skeptical, but did it. Success, I now have my voice rec working. I won a couple of oil changes on the bet <grin>.

The voice rec does change the radio stations, or you can say "onstar" and that kicks in for the phone. Or you can set up a voice tag on your address book entries. Then say "navigation got to ______" and it sets the route.

For the person looking for the onstar vcim. On my 08 GMC Sierra, it is located below the radio/ac controls. It is a silver box about 2 inches thick and 8 inches (or so) long. It will have 4 ports for wire harnesses. 1 and 2 will probably have connections, spot 3 and 4 will be unused. You need to get a connection for J3.

On a side note, I got the new update disk. It has an option to turn off the vehicle in motion limitations. The nag screen isn't there anymore as of yet.

HI, I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM. THE ABOVE GUY IS RIGHT. YOU WILL NEED A VOICE WIRE. YOU CAN GET THEM ON EBAY FROM A EBAY SELLER Tauk. THE ONSTAR BOX IS BEHIND THE HEATER CONTROLS. IN THE WIRE KIT YOU WILL GET A GREY PLUG WITH 2 WIRES WITH GM PINS IN THE END. ONE IS RED AND ONE IS BLACK. PLUG THE GREY CONNECTER INTO THE J3 SLOT,IN THE BACK OF THE ONSTAR MODULE. I WAS ABLE TO REACH THIS BY LAYING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FLOOR AND REACHING BEHIND THE CENTER COUNSEL. IT PLUGS IN NEXT TO THE OTHER TWO PLUGS IN THE 3RD SLOT. YOU THEN UNPLUG THE FIRST CONNECTOR ON THE NAV RADIO. THE BLACK ONE AND YOU WILL SEE A SMALL GREY PLASTIC SQUARE ON THE SIDE OF THE PLUG. PULL THIS PIN STRAIGHT OUT AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO INSERT THE RED WIRE INTO PIN HOLE #4 AND THE BLACK WIRE INTO PIN HOLE #5.IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE PLUG AS IF IT WERE IN THE RADIO, THESE WIRE GO INTO THE TOP ROW OF THE CONNECTOR. THREE WIRES THEN HOLE 4 AND 5. pUSH THEM ALL THE WAY IN AND REINSERT THE GREY PLASTIC PIN IN THE SIDE. PLUG THE CONNECTOR BACK INTO THE RADIO. THIS IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE INSTALLED A GM NAVIGATION RADIO IN PLACE OF THE STOCK RADIO.
