Who Has The Rough Country 3" Lift?

Recommended Posts

I have read numerous good and bad postings about the Rough Country 3" lift.

We have seen a lot of negative information on that lift. So, is it all mostly negative, or are there good experiences also?

I spoke (again) to the folks @ RC and they said they use the same Moog ball joint as is used in OEM applications. They said that regarding the ball joint failures, that there were some alignment issues.

Regarding the failed bushings, they said the installer had overtightened the bolts and actually flattened the bushing causing them to fail.

They also said they got some brackets in that were defective, and they fixed the problems associated with the early kits.

True??? False???

I think the price point of this kit makes it a serious contender for the mid-lifts that a lot of folks desire.

Lets hear the facts. What failed and why?

What is working well, who is having successes?

I have researched it a ton and there are good and bad to be said. I think its a good alternative to a full drop lift and with a little trimming can fit a 33x12.50 which will still fit in most garages. I am ordering one as soon as I pick out some wheels.

The ball joints in my kit failed within a couple of months. Some of the included studs had bad threads on them, the brackets didn't fit correctly, and my alignment issues grew worse over time. Now I am certainly not an expert by any means, so I am relying strictly on what the front end shop guy told me, whom I trust by the way. When he found out that the spindles (knuckles), had to be "clearanced" aka drilled, to allow fitment of the new upper ball joints, he was shocked. He told me that those are specifically machined and should never be altered or you will run into problems. Keep in mind that if you have problems like I and others have had, and you decide to take that crap off, then you have to buy new knuckles, which are not cheap!!!! The lift looked good and it rode pretty good to so those are the only positives. Perhaps the bugs have been worked out of the kit and maybe you could have success with the kit. I will never even consider that company again for anything.

I had nothing but problems with the RC 3" kit as most of you guys know. RC customer service sucks also by the way so for them to say that they have only had a couple of issues is a joke. They are flat out lying, Everyone I know that has tried the 3" kit has taken it back off for different reasons whether it be the brackets didn't fit correctly or ball joints failed or rubbing issues etc. If you want to spend the time to install RC's POS 3" kit then by all means go ahead but after all the bad/negative feedback from alot of guys on the forums you would think to stay away from the kit. I made the mistake by not going with the BDS 6" kit from the get go, I am now happier than ever that I have the BDS 6" kit on my truck and didn't have any issues with the install or quality of the parts.

Alot of guys on the forums have installed BDS suspension kits after I made my BDS post and I don't think there have been any negative comments so far. Do yourself a favor and Join the BDS club and save yourself the headache of having to install the RC kit then take it back off once you figure out that the kit is JUNK!!!

Well, I have to agree that the weight of the evidence is definately against the RC kit. Further there are many satisified BDS kit owners. I wanted to learn if there was a "perponderance" of evidence one way or another. At the $470 price point, you would have thought there would have been a ton of the RC kits already installed. I can only find a couple on this whole forumn. Of those few most owners were unhappy and had to take the kits off.

My Denali is too nice of a truck to get anything less than the BDS or equivalent.

I am going to go with a kit that is more substantial than the RC, I'm putting that project in the rear view mirror. My choices now, after much research and comparision are:

1. BDS 6"

2. CST 4"

3. Fabtech 6"

Not done evaluating the Trail master, Pro Comp, and a couple others.

I will be using the BFG 35" AT's off my Hummer. That vehicle will get a new set of BFG 37" MT's

As for wheels, I want 17 X8.5 or 17 X 9 with a 4.5 or a 5.0 backspacing

For the 35" tire crowd, how much of a difference does the 35" tire make vs the stock tires? My Concern is with RPM change and acceleration effects.

You will definately notice the larger tires when you accelerate, but with the Denali it shouldn't be much of an issue. If 35" tires are what is planned, scratch that 4" off of your list.
