4.8 294 Crate Engine

I have a 99 Sierra single cab, long bed, 2WD, with a 4.8 294, and I can't find a crate engine for the life of me! I've found one, but it only has 20 extra hp then the stock engine, and I'm not going to spend an extra couple grand just for 20 hp. Anyone know where I can find a crate motor for a 4.8? I don't really want to swap it out for a 350, I just want something that will fit right in, and cause me less hassle. Thanks for any help!

The GM GenIII motors are a great platform, and are fully interchangeable.

You could easily swap in a 5.3 or a 6.0 motor and it will drop right in, they are all the same size externally. They'll even run off your stock PCM until you can get it tuned to optimize the performance.

I'd say look into a 5.3 crate motor or even a take out motor from a wrecking yard, stick a decent cam in it, then enjoy the extra 50-60 hp you'll have over your current 4.8 setup.

It's entirely possible that GM is no longer manufacturing 4.8L engines as spares. But, as Mike stated, the 5.3L is a direct drop in and your computer will not have to be re calibrated (6.0L could be a different story, but it too drops right in). The price difference from a dealer for a 4.8 or 5.3 would be pretty negligible.

Out of curiosity, why are you looking for a new engine?
