Engine Noise Please Help

My 5.3 in my 06 has recently started making a kind of ticking noise from primarily the drivers side. It can only be heard with the hood closed, and sounds like its from the bottom area of the engine. The noise accelerates with engine RPM, but gets drowned out by my exhaust at around 1500 or so RPM. I have a video of my idle, the noise is the ticking in the background. Any ideas?

this may be the pcv ....have you replaced this...? this has happened to me

Sounds like an exhaust leak or cracked manifold to me.

 

Would that or a PCV valve cause gas mileage to go down significantly because around the time I began hearing the noise, it went down by like 2 mpg. Maybe its just the ethanol in the fuel. How would I check for an exhaust leak? Where is the PCV valve located?

this may be the pcv ....have you replaced this...? this has happened to me

 

 

haven't ever replaced the PCV where is that located?

Two more notes I neglected to mention. Firstly, it only makes the noise once warmed up. From a cold start, it idles fine but once it reaches operating temp, the "clicking" starts. I say clicking, but it is almost more of a swishing kind of noise that accompanies the click. Something exhaust related sounds possible. In addition, once the motor is warm, it does it constantly and consistently.

Ticks after it warms up doesn't seem like exhaust leak, why wouldn't it do it cold? Would a dirty or worn hydraulic lifter tick once the oil warms up? Can you tell what part of the engine it's coming from?

I cannot hear the noise if I look from the top over the motor due to the alternater/injectors/PS pump. However, if I have the hood closed, I can hear it from the side if I put my head down by the wheel well. I can also hear it from underneath on the driver side. It is much more pronounced on that side. The video was taken underneath the truck on the driver side.

I'll agree that exhaust leaks generally sound worse when cold. I didn't see where he mentioned whether it was hot or cold. (if so I missed that) A decent crack in a manifold or a blown gasket can make noise all the time. In the video it just doesn't sound mechanical... but it could just be the way the mike is picking it up too.

 

EDIT: AHA! I see his added post now. That would be somewhat odd for an exhaust leak.

Wish I could help more. Hard to diagnose noises over the internet. Might be worth buying a stethoscope. When you figure it out I'd be interested in hearing what it was.

When the exhaust manifold warms up it expands thus exposing the leak if thats what it is.

Wish I could help more. Hard to diagnose noises over the internet. Might be worth buying a stethoscope. When you figure it out I'd be interested in hearing what it was.

 

I appreciate the help. Its very annoying and I want to get rid of it, but I'm as unsure about what it is, other than the general area that it is coming from. I do agree with dembones though, it sounds much less mechanical and more like in the video, it is a pretty accurate representation of it on the video.

 

Edit: if anyone has any ideas/solutions please let me know!!

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
