Clunk Noise

Recommended Posts

For the last week or so, been hearing an intermitent clunk noise from what sounds like the rear-end of the truck. Mostly noticed it when pulling into my driveway (on a little bit of a hill).

Took a crawl around under the truck, nothing appears to be lose or anything....any ideas before I take it in?

I have had the same issue with my 01. I have a clunk when I first take off and I have also noticed a clunk when I tap the brakes real quick. I was wondering if you have figured anything out on yours. I plan on looking into mine over the weekend and/or next week so any advice would be great.

Thanks.

Sounds like a u-joint with a dry socket. Does it make a clunk when you first put it in gear? You mentioned clunking on a slight hill. U-joint is stiff it's not flexing anymore sounds like to me. Have someone stand and listen at the rear wheels when truck is put in gear, betting you will hear it clunking some. If so replace it with a spicer greasable joint.

While the u-joint would be my first guess as well, I've also heard that sometimes the spline shaft in the trans sometimes gets dry and will cause a clunking noise. Just something to consider.

I will def. look into u-joint issue. But its almost more of a suspention sound. To be more specific....I will be turning left into my driveway (only time ive heard it), when my passenger side rear wheel hits the dip at the end of the driveway is the only time it makes the "clunk" noise. weird!

Sounds like your rear diff locking after you go over the dip/bump in your driveway. Have had the same thing happen at my kids school parking lot, when turning left over a storm drain grate.
