Sierra/silverado Steering Wheel Button Lights!

Recommended Posts

I have a 2003 GMC Sierra with audio control buttons on the steering wheel. I noticed last night that the 'mute/prog' button's light is burnt out! Is there a way to fix this? Is it a difficult job? Any help is appreciated!

I don't think there is any way to change the light in the button. From what I have read, it is a dealer repair. They will probably have to replace that button module on the steering wheel.

Now that I did some research and searched high and low, it sounds like this may be a fairly simple DIY. Guys are saying 'remove the airbag and the buttons can then be replaced'. My problem is at the 'remove the airbag' stage. Can anyone give a detailed explanation of how to remove the airbag? I know it has something to do with the two holes on the rear sides of the steering wheel. Do I stick a small flathead in there and pull on the horn button? What do I do once I have the screwdriver in the holes? Just push, or twist the screwdriver? Which direction does the airbag come out? Thanks for your help, guys.

being a firefighter and seeing airbag's deploy at all the wrong times, i would strongly recommend pulling the battery cables off first, and letting your electrical system drain before playing with your airbags, some take as long as 15 minutes to drain, i know people say its okay as long as you don't hit off one of the sensors... but i still wouldn't trust them, I've seen firefighters severely injured/killed when reaching into a car and being hit with an airbag... treat it as a bomb... because if it does go off while your playing with it your most likely gonna have a screwdriver in your hand if it goes off.. and well yeah... lets not go there...

you should be able to use the slots you mentioned but I'm no mechanic so I'm not entirely sure, i would strongly recommend checking with your local dealer before you try anything just to be 100% safe...

good luck! let us know how it goes..
