Possible Electrical Problem?

Recommended Posts

I originally had this problem the first winter with this truck (Jan '07), and it showed up again yesterday. When it is really cold, yesterday it was 23F, when i pull up on the power window button for any window, and the window is already up, the dash lights will dim like there is a large draw of electricity and then the ABS warning light will flash and then the DIC will say, Service air bag.

When it is warmer out, the same action will cause the dash lights to dim, but I won't get the warnings. When I had the GM dealer look at this in '07, they said they did an electrical system check and everything looked OK. Any ideas on what would be doing this?

The dash lights dim because you are feeding power to a window motor that has stopped at the mechanical limits. Even though it has stopped, power is still fed to it when you operate the switch. There isn't a limit switch on the window. It just stops when it has no room to move anymore.

As far as the electrical problem goes, All connectors and contacts shrink in cold temperatures, along with everything else... and then expand when warm. It would be pretty easy to imagine a ground (or connector) that doesn't make good contact when it contracts in the cold and then makes good contact when warm.

Where to start looking might be a hair puller.

I had that happen twice with my 04 in cold temps (-10+) where the airbag light came on. Once it was warmed up it went away. I did have an actual issue about a year later where one of the wires under the driver seat position sensor broke off that threw a code. I replaced the wire and it's been good since.
