2000 Silverado Weak Lock Remote

I have had this 2000 Silverado for several years. About a month ago, the remote started not to work unless I was very close to the vehicle...bad battery right?? I replaced the battery (and its in right side up, I checked) and even tried with my second remote that had always worked before...same story. They used to work from about 50 feet away. What's next?

Did you clean the contacts in the remotes when you replaced the batteries? Take a pencil eraser and remove the filmy buildup on the contacts for the battery. Check the batteries for proper voltage using a volt/ohm meter. I've had "new" batteries that were old stock and weak and I had to clean the contacts on my company car remotes to make them work again.

 

Worth a shot.

 

Also... remotes that have gotten damp or wet many times tend to deteriorate. The circuit board inside can corrode. Might make sure they still look fresh. Corrosion makes the electrical pathways see added resistance and will diminish range over time.

What Jim said about new batteries being bad and about cleaning the contacts.

 

Another thing is that since these remotes are RF based they are subject to interference that can limit their effective range. I'm not sure what frequency they operate on but things like cell phones, wireless routers, cordless phones, and such can cause interference. I would try using the remote in different locations (eg: home, work, mall, beach, etc) to see if that makes any difference.

Thanks everyone!! I had already cleaned the battery connections, but hadn't thought about cleaning the contacts for the two buttons. I lifted the circuit board out of the housing and found that the contacts were filthy, a little contact cleaner, and a pencil eraser later, and we are back to working at a distance.

Probably a dead horse but...

 

I usually use alcohol (isopropyl) and a shop rag to clean the contacts, especially when there's a filmy, residue on the contacts. Works well on TV remotes as well. Just in case someone else reads this...
