Factory radio harness

I am looking to add an amp to my factory GM stereo (1998 C1500 w/ Cass and Remote CD).  I want to keep the factory deck and remote cd player, but I am replacing the speakers and adding an amp.  I would to prefer to not cut into the existing wiring harness that connects the head unit to actual speaker wiring.  I know you can buy aftermarket harnesses for adding a new head unit that plugs into the factory wiring.  I was thinking about using part of this to go from the speaker output on the amp to the factory wiring.  But since the amp only has rca inputs I am going to use a line-level convertor to convert the high level signal coming from the factory deck to feed the low level rca amp input.  Is it possible to buy (from gmpartsdirect or etc.) the harness that goes from the factory head unit to the factory wiring.  Worst case is I splice/cut into the factory wiring to feed the signal to the amp through the convertor.  Any other ideas are welcome

Any place that installs car stereos will have a harness for you. It will cost about 15-30 bucks

I know most stores will have a harness for adding an aftermarket head unit.  I am looking for the GM number for the harness that connects the factory head unit to the factory wiring.  I couldn't imagine Best Buy or Circuit City carrying these, though it could make their job easier for their shops when adding an amp to a factory head unit.  I have always done my own stereo work, but I will check around.  It is much easier adding an aftermarket head unit, but I like the setup I have, that an my wife got my old stuff out of my old lumina (Kenwood Amp, Head unit, CD-Changer, 6x9s, old 8-inch truck boxes).  Glad I didn't put my 6.5 inch polk components or infinity 4x6 component plates in her car!  Perfect replacement for the truck.

never seen a special harness for gm oem decks just for adding an amp. probably just have to use a high level converter and use the stock speaker wire.

 

really the best way to go for best quality is a nice head unit like an eclipse or nakamichi, high end kenwoods etc. a head unit is nothing something to try and save money on it so maybe keep that in mind.

if you go to a local Chevy/GMC dealer they should be able to look up the part and order it for you, usually the parts guys can get the number fairly quickly.

Thanks for all the help.  I have found what I need, but I have another question.  I wanted to double check the back of the factory radio to see if the harness matched an old wire harness I had for a Chevy Lumina that connected an aftermarmet radio to the factory wiring.  It did, but I noticed on my factory harness there are two wires, solid green and green w/ a white stripe, but there are no correspnding wires on the aftermarket adapter.  If you were to look at this link:

The wires would be just left of wire 1.  I thought it may have been for the door tweeters, but they (wires) are red and black.  Could it be for the speed compnesated volume control?  Any ideas would help.

Junk the stock head unit.  I just did on Monday, and I wish I had done it a lot sooner.  It's not just weak, power wise, the tuner is pretty sorry too.  It was kind of touchy about CDs too, it didn't like black ones (click, click, click), and was very touchy about any smudges on them.  My friend's 2001 plays black CDs fine, but skips once in a while.  Mine never did that, at least.  The WORST H/U I have had in a car/truck since my 85 caravan!

 

I should have done mine when the truck was a few months old, instead of 19 months old.  For 336 bucks, the H/U, bass blockers (for the pitiful back speakers), and installation, it was money very well spent.  I could have saved over $50 form that price, but I wanted to be able to play MP3 files on the H/U.

 

I was planning on keeping the stock H/U, and doing the amp thing, but didn't, and now I like listening to music in my truck!

    • I would be surprised if the diff's were not filled (with the cheapest gear lube) at the axle factory before being shipped to GM.  If you ever watched them building trucks they install the axles and all suspension parts with the frame upside down and then turn it over before its time to install the engine.     Too much gear lube in a axle can be worse than not enough especially with a lower quality GL where is get whipped up with entrained air (foam)  weakening its ability to lubricate.        
    • This is the 6.6 gasser section of the forum, you should either delete or modify your previous post as it is misleading for anyone looking for factual information on their 6.6 gas engine.
    • Well....I've done my first intake gasket. Probably wrong, but...we'll see?   Ultra black on the china walls and 1/4" up onto the sides of the intake gaskets. Permatex High Tack (couldn't find Gaskachinch) on the head side of the intake gasket. I read wrong and it says you're supposed to put it on the mating surface of the head, not the gasket. Hoping it's like a PB&J sandwich where it doesn't matter what side the PB goes on so long as there's jelly. That crap is messy/sticky and I got a dab or two on the intake port openings, tried to wipe it off. Hopefully it won't be a big deal and will only aid in sealing.   Per instructions I left the intake (top side) of the gasket dry except for a light smear of RTV around the coolant ports. Wiggling the intake in there was a bear but I had help to free me of surrounding wiring/stuff but I was basically able to set it straight down lined up with the bolt holes.   I did not think to wait until the RTV skinned over but there probably was 5-10 minutes while it sat before installing the intake.   Bolts finger tight first. Then, followed the Chilton's manual pattern to snug them to 15 lb-ft.   Waited a little over an hour, and then did the final torque in sequence again to 35 lb-ft.   Yesterday I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and got my new "nut and bolt kit" (fuel lines) installed. Damn GM used security torx on the spider, which I don't have, so I got scammed at the local HW store for an off-brand security Torx bit set.   The new driver's door mirror arrived yesterday, so, there's a chance this thing could be running and road legal tomorrow? I don't want to get my hopes up.   This will be my first time stabbing a distributor, too. Although, lucky me, someone else marked the old distributor for removal previously, I did see that. (Someone's been here before!!). Engine is still at TDC so it *should* be just a matter of transferring the mark to the new dizzy and rotating it into place.

He did raffle off a new suburban recently. As much as he is watched if he drove new stuff as a rule we’d know it. It would be fine by me. I don’t care what people prefer. I got one more new one in me. I’d rather my wife get one. I can’t get her out of the Genesis. Don’t tell anyone. I want her to get an electric truck. I want to put a generator in the back. Just because. She hasn’t bit yet.
    • Yes, you must have seen my thread on the Blazer. HOT GARBAGE, but I love them anyway. I'm convinced every car guy has a soft sport for an S/T series somewheres. Probably even a Panther too, if I'm being an honest car guy. That doesn't mean they aren't junk. And they definitely don't get better with age. I sometimes play with old cars, but that's by choice. I don't rely on them and they aren't my everyday fleet.   Derek plays the common man on Youtube and that's no doubt where he started. Now he has Youtube money (and Motortrend, etc). You think his crews and his wife ride around in old beaters when they're chasing him and his wrecks across the country? No he's got newer and nicer stuff for that, you'll see glimpses of it in the footage.
