Tech Ii Won't Communicate

I'm trying to communicate with any of my GM vehicles with a Tech II but none of them will communicate. I'm brand new to a TII so I've got alot to learn. Tried the self test using the loopback 3000109 but I get a failure. Not sure what exactly failed at the moment but I rerun it if I need to. What am I doing wrong?

If you are doing a loopback test and getting a failure? I would assume your cable is bad or tech2 is bad. Did this come with a set of instructions?
