Cold Start Problem

When very cold the starter makes a loud whinning noise on first attempt to start. On the second attemp it has always started, so far, without any problem. Normally it is only an issue on first start in the morning but there have been occasions when it has happened again in the same day when very cold and it sits for an extended period of time. Any suggestions on what might be causing this. It is a 1500HD Silverado with 6L engine. My thinking is that the cold is causing the bendix not to throw out and the first failure breaks it free allowing it to start the second try.

While not with current vehicles I had seen this on older vehicles. Its not normal and could be an indication of a faulty starter.

I'd look at replacing the starter as it sounds like it is only a matter of time before it leaves you stranded.

Before you go out and start it one morning, take a wrench and tap on it a few times and see if it does it.

But yea like they said, its probably just going out.

There is grease on the throw out fork of the starter which gets stiff in the cold. If the starter was on it's way out, it would do it all the time. Do you plug your truck in?? This should warm the starter enough to work every time. Just my 2.5 cents.
