how much modification would it take to perform an engine swap from a friends wreaked 06 duramax 2500 to my 06 silverado 1500 or could you even do it in the first place? he totalled his truck pretty much and his insurance wont give him much for it so he's parting it out and said he could get me a good deal on his engine/trans combo. i know it sounds stupid lol but i was just wondering thought it would be kinda cool.

Its more work than its worth. Chances are the 1500 frame and IFS couldn't handle the Dmax/Allison combo.

Your biggest problem is weight. The engine in your 1500 weighs approximately 375lbs give or take. The Duramax alone weighs almost 800lbs, without the Allison. The 1500 series frame is just not designed to handle it. It can be done, but with the amount of time, energy, parts, and money you will spend, believe me, your better off just buying a truck with a Duramax.

I would think a 1500 chassis would be a little lightweight for the Dmax. Main issue would not be frame strength but the light front suspension. All that extra weight would cause the front suspension to bottom out over ANY slight bump. It would destroy it in short order... much like carrying a full load all the time.

It would be a complex swap and I am sure some decent fabrication skills would be needed to build crossmembers and stuff. If you did swap, you'd need all wiring, computers, instrumentation, etc. You better have a lot of time!
