I just bought a 2003 2500HD ext cab4x4 6.0,80k on it and runs perfect, bought with intended use to plow, but also gonna be my driver as well, i know there not the best for fuel but is there any real ways to improve fuel econemy ,like cold air intake, hypertech programmer exhaust, etc. do any of these things work honestly, or should i plan on 8-9mpg city and 13-14mpg hwy and be happy with that i plan on changing plugs, fuel filter and air filter(tune up) etc .

I did a test on my truck and was shocked at the difference.

I did it on 3 500 mile trips to florida where the road was flat. No hills.

At 74 mph, I got 18.6 mpg on regular unleaded (No E85 or 10%)

At 61 mph (the best I could get) I got 20.5 mpg

Speed is a bigger factor than I had thought it would be.

Speedy................You can figure on 10 mpg city-15 hiway stock.

This was on my 04 2500 x-cab 6.0 4:10s.

I used a Hypertech hand held and I got 2 mpg addl. and a bit more

giddy-up to boot!

I Still have the unit because it didn't go with the truck when I

traded it in on my 07. If you interested in it for $100 shoot me

a e-mail or PM...........geo

Yes, at 61 the V4 mode was on most of the time. After around 65, it cycled between V4 and V8 a lot. That is actually how I found the best mpg/mph. I would slow down in increments until I saw the V4 on most of the time. For my truck, the magic number was 61 mph.

My 07 Classic have a few mods...originally, I got 12.5 mpg average back and forth to work (/2 city and 1/2 hiway)....never got over 14 on straight hiway travel and never got less than 11 in the city.

I went to 265x70x17 tires, and lost some mpg and power...not a lot, but some.

Added a BRUTE FORCE air intake, a Flowmaster cat back, and a Blackbear 87 octane tune...truck sounds really good....and it seems to run better with the Blackbear.

For mpg, I get 11 in the city, 14.5 straight hiway, and about 13.2 average back and forth to work...

The intake was $300

The Cat back was $350

The tune was $300

So, for about $1,000 I have a truck that sounds good, runs good and gets about the same mileage as when I started...sure hope gas stays under @2 for a long time!!

I would never use 87 octane in my truck, always use 89 or 93. City mileage is higher then 8-9 or what ever it was you posted. I use BFG AT KO's in a 265 75 R 16 which is a heavier tire, so mileage will go down a tad. You don't need to swap out the air intake because it comes with a high flow air filtration system. I've changed the exhaust with a Gibson cat back system and noticed some wake up in power. What will really affect your mileage is the weight. I have a tool box in back with hundreds of pounds of stuff, and when I am out plowing I have even more weight to carry around between the plow, spreader and bags of extra salt. I don't have the onboard computer that displays mileage, but I can tell you that I get alot better mileage then my F250 that had a 5.8 351 engine.
