i have a 2006 gmc z-71 crew cab. i want a sun roof put in. can i get one installed after market, but work and look the same as factory???????? thanks ed......

Aftermarket sunroofs will never fit or work the same as OEM sunroofs.

 

 

 

Adding an aftermarket sunroof to your truck will decrease the value of it, since they are prone to leaking.

Also, factory sunroof equipped trucks most likely have additional reinforcements in the roof structure to keep the already flimsy roof form caving in upon itself. Sunroof ads weight.

Hey Ed,

 

While I kind of agree with the other guys here on the board about the possibility of leaks, if you really would like a Sunroof, I think the best thing you can do is find a Donor Truck that had one to begin with from the factory....basically of course you'd still have to make the whole in the roof....but by getting the parts from a Donor Truck you would better your chances of a factory like install, basically you could get the Headliner, Overhead Console, Mounting Braces, and of course the Sunroof Assembly, and also the DRAINS! thats' probably one of the most important things! It may take a little more research and time in gathering your parts, but the trucks are out there.....and with a reputable shop, you can probably have a factory like install!

If you really want a sunroof, I would let somebody install it professionally. There are companies who specialize in this and some even offer power sunroofs that slide and tilt just like factory units.

 

Keep in mind that factory installed sunroofs have drain holes in the frame and also drain tubes which carry rain water ways from the sunroof trough. Installing these tubes may not be an easy task.

you could go OEM for the sunroof, but I would vote for the Webasto Grand View Sunroof:

That is what I am going to have installed (eventually) by Classic Soft Trim. I also inquired about having a lifetime warranty added to the install to guard against leaks, breakdowns, etc. I personally do not care about the value of the vehicle for 2 reasons: 1) I am close to paying this off and I dont trade vehicles at the dealership 2) I plan to drive this sucker into the ground. If you have the same outlook on your truck, I would say to do it and have it done by Classic Soft Trim. Most guys here have either dealt with or heard of Classic Soft Trim. If you dont want to go with the Grand View Sunroof, look at either of these:

Ironically, most of the OEM sunroof parts themselves are from Webasto.

OEM roofs fail and leak just like aftermarket.

Parts are not available for OEM sunroofs. Glass, motor, switch. That's about it. Out of warranty repair is a complete replacement, about $1500.

Aftermarket roofs do not devalue a vehicle, they meet NADA requirements.

 

Do not try to install an OEM salvage roof!

Find a good, honest aftermarket installer. Learn about the products and meet the installer.

Carry on!

Classic Soft Trim are leather installers, don't let them install your sunroof! Find a webasto dealer!

Sunroof in my wife's 04 Impala works beautifully and has never leaked a drop (4.5 years).

 

Same goes for the sunroof in my truck (2 years).

I installed a power Webasto in my 03 and it worked flawless for more than 5 years without leaks. I loved it. It cost me $750 with a trim ring on the inside, but for $1100 I could have had the headliner tucked for a little cleaner installation.

 

I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

      You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
