Window Crank Removal

i do believe they just pull straight out... you should be able to slip something flat underneath to get a grip on it, and pop it off. heck, if you break it, its a 9$ part... as far as i can remember tho, i just pulled mine straight off...

i have a 2001 sierra 2500, with manuel window cranks. i can't figure out how they come off. anyone know?

Behind the flat base of the crank, with a small flat tip screw driver, press forward the small metal retainer you'll find. Once that is removed the handle should pull free.

Yep. There's a little C shaped retainer clip behind it. Pop it off and the crank slides right off. But the bastard shoots off if you're not careful (Yea, been there, done that). Pretty simple procedure.

Yea the handle broke off on the driver's side of my old man's truck, so I went and got a cheap handle to replace it. The dam clip flew into the lawn, which pissed me off, but then the part i bought for ~$5 to replace it is absolute crap. It's starting to strip, and now it goes about a quarter of the way around before it even starts moving the window. Grrr... I'm gonna look for some nice cranks for Father's Day.

Niceeee. Although before I drop $65 for window cranks, I'm gonna try to convince him to buy something with power windows. And door locks for that matter. LoL

So just replacing the crank takes the slack back out? My dumbass brother, rather than scraping my windows, just forced it and now I've got a half inch or more of play before it moves either way. Replacing the crank will solve that? Anyone have a part number?

Thanks a lot everyone! i got my dad new speakers for the truck and couldn't changed them out because of the window cranks. i'll get them installed now!

Also there is a tool made to remove those clips. Not really required but may come in handy to have, depending on price.

I just used a long flathead screwdriver. That's also why I spent 45 minutes searching my lawn for the clip.

Yep. Instead of going with a simple square, or triangle shape to lock the handle to the crank, GM though it would be funny to make it like a freakin' 12 point star. Well, needless to say, all those little points aren't really that strong. When you take the handle off compare it to the new one. The old one will look all deformed.

They make a tool that is made to pop the clip off and on, it's like $5. I believe it's the "help" brand. I still have one in my tool box from my old 88 Silverado. I never thought I'd need it again and almost threw it away, but when I help friends work on their trucks, and I pull that tool out they think I'm "the man"! I also have a trim removal tool. It was about $8 and looks like a big common screwdriver with a notch in the middle. Sure does save the trim from screwdriver marks...Treat yourself!
