Broken Tranny.

My first post but have been using the GREAT info on this site for a few years now but was driving home tonight and was just messing around and rolled into the throttle from a stop. At 5900 R.P.M it attempted to shift into second and proceeded to make a loud bang and rev to 6100 where I have the rev limiter set. Now I only have 1st and 3rd gear and no reverse. What's even better is that this is the second tranny to do this to me! Only the first time I didn't even have park and they had to throw away the entire thing and start new because it was so messed up. Yay for me! Way to end a weekend haha

Tell us more about your truck.

What would you like to know? It's a 2000 Chevy 1500 extended cab short bed. 5.3 with a few mods but nothing major. The factory trans lasted 120,000 or so miles and the second one lasted 35,000 miles. It has a 3.42 rear end with an Auburn Pro Series limited slip differential because I broke two of the stock ones. Other than that it's been a great truck and puts up fairly well to the harsh life I expose it to.

Do any of the mods include transmission shift changes?

Sounds like you better have Justin at black bear performance program for your new transmission. :D

<----------154,000 on the clock of the original tranny

2 trannys and 2 rear ends in 150K miles. You need to upgrade to heavier duty equipment or learn to drive within the tolerances of what you have.

You must be damn hard on your truck. I have 172+k on the original tranny. I haul stuff daily for work, and also use it as my daily driver. I guess I just learned how to respect thing's in my old age. :D

I'm at 212,000 miles on the 99 2500 with a 6.0L/4L80E. No mods to the truck/eng/trans and no probs with the eng/trans.

Is your truck 2wd or 4wd? Do you "shock" the drivetrain a lot or do you drive easy when you are "working it pretty hard".

I have really pushed my '03 hard and it hasn't broken yet (knock wood)

Yeah I had it tuned by Texas Speed a few years ago and they changed the shift points to 5900 in each gear under full throttle. Also they bumped the rev limiter to 6100 and moved the speed limiter to 250 M.P.H. and deleted the EGR and rear O2 sensors so I could remove the catalytic converters and put a 3 inch exhaust with Dynomax bullet dumped at the rear axle. The trans shop called me earlier and said the gears were broken inside the transmission just like the first time. He said the gears are made of cheap metal from China and he is now getting '04 and '05 models in with the same problem. Texas Speed also turned off the torque management which would back off the timing when it would upshift which I'm sure is harder on the trans internals. But yes, I drive this poor truck like I just rented it at Enterprise Rent-A-Car and I don't have any plans on changing my driving style until I get tired of paying for expensive repairs haha. I tow a ski boat about 10 miles a year with it but I race it constantly with nitrous on occasion but I haven't used that in a while.

People like you are the reason for the torque management  You override that stuff and you should expect it to break. Lots of built transmissions available.
