Need A New Battery

I run a amp for my sub and i have 6 6inch lights and 4 5 inch lights on the front of my brushguard (well soon to be) a little much i know.. But anyways if i leave my radio on for any amount of time without it being started (not the lights just radio) the battery dies in less that 20 minutes. What kind of battery should i get thats going to last me a long time and maybe be able to power my radio for longer??? Thanks in advance.

consider finding a place install another battery, a sealed gel cell, that will also help extend your battery life for extended playing while not running the engine, but the yellow top will be one of the better ones to get.

Stay away from red tops!!!! Mine died on me yesterday and today because of the cold weather. One time i went on leave for like a week and when i got back the battery was DEAD. WTF over! I think i'm going to get a walmart or sears battery. I've been stuck inside because of the damn battery. Of course i wouldn't drive anyways because the roads are iced over. Actually had the whole day off because the base was shut down.

My 99 GMC 2500 has factory dual batteries. The second battery is located by the firewall on the passenger side. Close to the ac lines. I will snap a pic and post tonight.

 

I think you can get an auxillary battery kit with everything in it. Or you can buy the components seperately (battery isolator, cables, battery pan).

I bought the aux battery plate and mounting stuff from GM and installed a second battery on my truck.

Wired up an ign triggered high current continous duty solenoid. it works good.

I only use the truck in spurts and sometimes it sits for 30 too 90 days untouched.

even after 30 days i would go too start it and not even get a click.

I don't have onstar, so I couldn't blame that for killin the battery. and i was getting really annoyed over it.

I called GM and they said that the truck should be able too sit for 30 days and start up no problem.

I have the battery tested and it was a bit weak but it should have been ok according too the battery place.

I was fed up especially since alot of times the truck is parked out in the bush and I hate walking back too civilization.

So i paid the generals price for the second battery plate and mounting stuff, bought 2 new high cranking amp batteries and a 600 amp continuous duty solenoid and wired it all up. when the truck is shut off the second battery has no connection too the truck at all.

if the primary battery happens too die i have a over ride switch in the cab that is powered by the second battery too trigger the solenoid essentially giving myself a boost from the spare battery without having too get out of the truck.

Some day i have too hook up an amp meter to the primary battery and start pullin fuses too see where the draw is and if there is anything I can do about it.

with 2 new batteries the mounting plate and stuff and the solenoid it was around 400 bucks, I used 4 gauge wire too connect the two batteries.

one thing, if it wasn't that clear in my original post, your alternator will power your subs and amp, not the battery.

I take it you most likely still have the OEM battery in it? Those batteries last, I actually replaced mine last week at 6 years old, even though it still had a green indicator light on it. I replaced it with same one (Delco Professional) cost $129.00. I seen a huge difference once I replaced the battery. I too power alot of stuff in my truck. A plow for starters, two digital Memphis M class amps, 1700 inverter, laptop, printer, CB radio, 3 amber strobes and 4 corner hidden strobes, scanner. Anyway to make a long story short, I had power drainage issues on my F250, everytime I cranked up the sound system, the 2 12" speakers in the kicker box would make my battery needle move and dim the dash board lights. This same system I transferred into my 2500 never did that, but as of recent I noticed the lights dimming quite a bit when operating the plow. Well I was debating whether or not to go the dual battery route, but first wanted to see the difference of what a new fresh battery would have.

 

I noticed right away that my headlights were brighter, and when operating the plow and having the sound system on, oh an a tailgate spreader, the lights hardly dimmed, strobes were also going too! As the battery gets older and weakens, it makes the alternator work harder, so replacing the battery will also prolong your alternator. I personally would try replacing the battery with a Delco Professional and see how your truck functions then. You can always do the dual battery thing if you are not satisfied. That Delco Professional battery is a 6 year 78 month battery, with a 3 year replacement. It was well worth the money. I used to always run Interstate Mega Tron Plus batteries, and would be lucky to get 4 years out of them.
