Guillotined By Garage Door

Yesterday as I was pulling out of the garage ramp in the apartment complex where I live, another neighbor was driving up to the entrance and clicked on her garage door remote as I was driving out. The door of course then caught my truck and ripped off the satellite antenna from my roof, as well as the third brake light/bed lamp.

The problem here is that this neighbor is a friend of the family, and she's not doing all that great in the finances department...so I'm trying to assess how costly this damage really is.

I know the scratches will more or less buff out, but does anyone know around how much one of these antennas is, and also how hard it would be for me to replace it? (or is it something that needs to get reprogrammed at the dealer?). What about the brake light bezel (around how much are these?)

Here are some pics of the aftermath:

Man that sucks! Even though she's a friend of the family, those fixes may cost more than you'd like, I'd let your insurance companies sort it out. Or Better Yet, since your apartment complex doesn't have a sensor to detect when something is below the door, you should take it up with their insurance company.

Good thinking! I think that's the angle I'd try to work. It saves both sides and identifies the true culprit.

ah man that blows, especially since it's a friend that's in financial trouble. if it were me i'd split the bill with her. for what it's worth, i'm not a fan of how our satellite antennas look...at least yours is removed now

My motto for life: shit happens, then you die.

Try a junkyard, I couldn't imagine anything more than a simple plug somewhere for the antenna. I don't know if I'd deal with insurance.

What if it had been a little kid under the door instead of a TRUCK?

The door should have had a sensor on it.

I agree. I would not go with the insurance, as I doubt that antenna will be that much (may not meet your deductible), and they will probably raise your rates. I usually don't get the insurance involved unless it is something major. I saw some onstar antennas going for $40-$80. I'm guessing that the 3rd brake light will be under $100 as well. Good luck.
