Questions About Nbs Silverado

So my dad is about to buy a nbs silverado or sierra and was wondering about problems that it is likely to have, or are common, for example like on my 04 it has the gauges that are going out that i am about to fix that all of them do and some have the castech heads, etc,etc. Anyways was just trying to figure out what is likely to go wrong even though i am sure most ppl don't have a lot of miles still would be nice to know what is probably going to have to be repaired or warrantied. thanks in advance

The gauges is one of the most common things, they have a special coverage for 7/70k, upper intermediate steering shaft which isnt anything major, and evap vent solenoid, those are the top three things that i can think of right now.

If hes looking for a 3/4 or 1 ton the damn tire pressure system is ridiculous. It warns when the pressure drops below 85% of max. pressure. with the E rated tires max is 80psi. I run 55 psi most of the time because I'm empty. You have to shut the warning off every time you start the truck and a caution light will be on 4 ever. Maybe with other tires you could run them harder but the stock tires, even with 65 lbs will have you bouncing off the road in the rain. Some guys have said their dealers reprogrammed it for them. They can if they choose. I would get that confirmed and fixed before signing the deal. Just a nit picking thing but why should you have to pay them to change something as stupid as that? My truck was delivered with 65 psi front and 80 psi rear. Just fine with a ton in the bed. empty..not so good..M.R.

yes, the tire monitoring system can be reset. Dealerships have a special tool for it, you have to turn the key on and hold the lock and unlock button on the key fob then the special tool is used, its called a relearn procedure.

thanks so far keep comments coming he will be buying a half-ton v8 because i know that matters for some issues and to sick102985 i knew about that coverage but i have 112k so i am the warranty and i am about to order replacement motors off ebay, anyways thanks in advance for the help with the nbs problems

Nothing big has really jumped out as problem spots on the 900s that I'm aware of. They have only been out for three years, which really doesn't give much time to spot the trouble spots. Although I'm pretty sure the steering column and fuel sending unit problems popped up pretty early on the 800s.

I've been known to take a vehicle back for warranty for the smallest problems just to make sure things are right while under warranty. With nearly 20,000 miles on my 08 Sierra, I have not had it in for any warranty work of any kind. The General really got it right with the 900 series in my opinion.

I have about 24,000 miles on my 2007 CC Vmax and I absolutely love it. I have had it to the dealer a couple times but they were very minor things. The sunroof was leaking a little because the drain was plugged (fixed) and there was a brake light issue on the 07's and early 08's that is resolved now.

 

I'm sure that there will be some people post how much they hate AFM, but I love it and it works well with my driving style and the area I live. It's not perfect, but it works well for me.

 

The GMT900 trucks are great! You'll love it. Make sure to post some pics when you get it.

Make sure he gets leather seats. The cloth seats attract lint/fuzz/dust/whatever like an old Milli Vanilli cassette tape.

I owned a '07 GMT900 and now the current '08 in my sig. The brakes in both trucks vibrate when braking hard from 40mph or faster and both did it since day 1 when I drove it off the lot. It appears to be warped rotors. It's weird that both trucks did it but I haven't seen many others mention the issue. I'm finally going to get it to the dealer next week to have them take a look at it. Other than the brakes, I have had no major issues and I have been very pleased with the GMT900...especially after the tune.

 

AFM is seamless in my truck so I have no complaints with it. Many people also have issues with the "lint collecting seats" but I must have been lucky b/c the seats in my truck do not collect much lint at all. If I do notice some lint, it takes all of 2 minutes to take a lint roller to them and they are as good as new again.

Reported powertrain issues that I have heard of with the GMT900 platform are.. leaking rear main seals and rack and pinion seals leaking. Many are complaining of driveshaft spline joint problems. This is observed when at a stop and it almost feels as if someone tapped the truck from behind. GM TSB's say to grease the splines. The Ebony Premimum cloth lint attraction issue is also another.

 

I bought mine in Aug 08 and it now has 3700miles. No dealership visits and no problems. Seems very well built. Fit and finish are very nice. I have the Ebony cloth seats and mine don't seem to attract much lint at all. These motors are strong and well designed. The only drawback IMO to the platform is that GM is still using the aged 4L60E 4 speed in these trucks. Tell him to get the 6L80E 6 speed auto for sure.

Interesting... the first GMT900 that I test drove did the same thing, and I mentioned it to the salesman. The truck that I bought didn't have any such symptoms. To this day, the brakes are a very smooth; absolutely zero pulsation, and I tow on occasion. In fact, it's the only vehicle I have that I can say that about. I'd have it checked by the dealer.
