Need Help On Factory Amp

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas. Looking around to see if anybody has "repaired their own" factory amp circuit board.

2000 Tahoe...radio power up, stations change, but no sound

Performed all electrical testing at work yesterday, diagnosed faulty factory amp.

Remove amp, remove a couple screws, and found the circuit board to have a "burnt spot" on it. Burn spot was like the size of a very small button.

Anybody have some tips on repairing the existing circuit board? Any advice / pics on accomplishing this??

I looked on ebay, these amps are going for around $130; dealer cost is above $300.

I'd rather repair the existing amp for less than $3 if you know what I mean.

Anyone??

The main problem is what caused the board to short like that? What components got fried with the board? Were any of the traces destroyed? If so, you're pretty much out of luck on fixing it. How many layers is the board? If a capacitor blew then it may have shorted it's voltage across the board via the ground plane which may have fried most of the components.

Typically with a fault like that the boards aren't worth fixing. You can try to repair the visible damage and see if that works. Though replacing surface mounted components is a real pita.

All existing, original speakers ohm-tested all good. All factory wiring good.

This Tahoe had an aftermarket stereo and subs in it...that's most likely what popped the board (and amp)

Update...local salvage yard has a 01 Suburban in their inventory...tomorrow AM I'll be taking a drive...see if I can match some part numbers...

Still very curious to see if I could get the original amp to work.

If this were mine, I would attempt to fix it if I gould get a schematic diagram, but where can you get schematics for these things?

On another vehicle I tried just finding a pinout for an integrated circuit chip, but could not find this anywhere on the internet. I can't fix something if I can't get technical documentation on the parts (or get the parts)...
