GM trech,

my "09' siara 6.0L with 20,000 miles" leaks around the filter within 100 miles before a oil change every time if i use Synthetic or conventional. once it starts it will loose a quart with in 2-3 days I have tried to find a different filter than stock size to see if that would help, with no luck. i have even considered a remote filter kit. just seems like a problem i shouldn't have with a new truck

I have never heard of this before. I have heard of a filter leaking but when you change the oil and spin on a fresh filter it goes away. I would make more of an issue at the dealership this is under warranty if you leak that much oil its a issue they should take care of.

Have you tried to simply snug it up when it leaks? I always spin filters on hand tight and I have had a few on small industrial kawasaki engines leak but aside from that its never been an issue.

If you wanted to do a remote filter though I think its a good idea. I dont have one but the filters they use are very small and a pain to work with relative to what a remote unit would have to offer.

Remove the filter and do a careful inspection of the gasket surface on your engine. I can't imagine what else it ould be so long as you are intalling it correctly. It calls for 33/4 turn after contact and I'm also assuming you wipe a little fresh oil onto the seal before installing?

+1

Out of curiosity, what brand filter are you using? Is it the same brand each time? As Dansk stated check the block mating surface. An old oil filter seal isn't stuck on there is it?

When it starts leaking I can loosen the filter and retighten it and it will give me about 1 more week before I change my oil.

I have had oil changed at the dealership, quick lubes, and changed it myself with fram,ac delco and all the cross reffs at the part store and they all star leaking when its time for an oil change.

My buddy at OReily said that all of the people that have the 6.0 are having a simular problem.

Sorry my truck is an 08' not an 09' but still to new to have a bigger oil spot in the driveway than 85' K5 and to anwer the tight filter Q: about a 1/2 turn past hand tight with oil in the tinny little filter and on the gasket.

That's news to me. There are many 6.0 in my companys fleet, 3 '09s. I just checked with the guy that that services all of our equipment. He's not seen this problem. We're running about 8k between changes.

What is your change interval mileage?

this time it was at 5500 but if i use convetional oil i get just less than 3k before it starts to leak. that has been the norm on it is about 5k for Synthetic and about 3k for conventional.i would run mine on about the same as you about 8k or so if there was no leak. oil presure goes down when the leak starts, dropping to around 20 or what ever the 1/2 line is between 40 and 0. i assumed that when the filter would become to dirty to flow properly the oil would push out the seal
