8.1 Timing Gear

Got 120,000 on the clock. I am beginning to fear a catastrophic release of nylon particles through my perfectly running 8.1. My question is does this motor have that nylon coated gear or a steel one.

Searches turned up no answers. Thanks guys

Great question. I thought GM did away with the 'nylon' timing gear back in the late 70's or early 80's after so many would decide to randomly self destruct after enough heating and cooling cycles.

I would think it would have to be made of metal. Nylon doesn't have the magnetic properties that would allow a camshaft position sensor to work properly.

As I recall the actual teeth were metal as was the hub but there was a ring of nylon between the teeth gear and the hub where it attached to the shafts to reduce the noise the chain & gears made. But it's been quite a few years and I may be wrong.
