Metal On Metal Rubbing Sound

Imagine you're strapped to the underside of a moving 2003 Yukon XL. Now imagine that you're strapped under there and you have in your hand a putty knife. Now imagine that you're under there with your putty knife and you lay the metal part of the putty knife flat against the spinning drive shaft. Now imagine what that sound would be like.

 

That's the sound I hear coming from the passenger side, rear wheel when making turns to the right (like when on an exit ramp). It happens most often during that type of maneuver and it doesn't matter whether I'm braking or not. It's never happened in a left-hand turn.

 

I had it in the dealership for this issue last month and was told there was a build-up of break dust and dirt and rust around the dust shield and that it wasn't really anything to worry about it was just making noise. Long story short, I told them to make it stop making that noise. They did and it stopped until yesterday.

 

I called the service guy and he told me that it sounds like it's the same thing again and if it is it's really nothing to worry about but to bring it in and they'd check it again.

 

So I'm wondering. WTF is that? If it is just dust and dirt and rust isn't there something I can do to it myself instead of waiting for them to fix it? Any ideas?

Disclaimer: I just bought this rig last December, it has 72,000 miles on it. And before anyone gets flamey about being soaked by the dealership and/or wasting money, the service manager has already offered to credit me the previous cost should there be any additional costs this time.

I would think tha the backing plate is probly bent abit and doesn`t take much buildup to cause noise, worst be maybe get the whole backing plate replaced, its a bit of a job but would let you get in there and really see whats going on,

 

I have also heard of the park brake shoes (or at least whatever holds them in) break or wear out and the shoes just kinda fall down and grind away.... if your park brake doesn`t hold so well get them to check that too.

My truck had a bad right rear axle. The seal had actualy worn a groove in the axle and it was leaking pretty bad. The first time, they replaced the seal. the second time, they replaced the axle. This was at around 20,000 miles. I'm not sure what happended, but somewhere along the line the part of the axle under the seal wasn't hardened, or it was softened. Either way, the metalurgy wasn't right.

 

Maybe you have something similar.
