Ac Belt Tensioner

09 Sierra CC -- 5.3l

The truck was making some belt noise on startup so I was inspected the setup.

How is the AC belt tensioned? I don't see a traditional tensioner like I'd expect... I see the bolt holes in the backet where I'd expect the tensioner to live. Anyone?

There's a tensioner just like on the serpentine belt, it's tensioning the bottom of the belt. It's a spring loaded idler pulley, I think that's the right word.

I've not looked closely at the GMT-900's...But on the previous trucks, it's down low on the front of the engine, passenger side. You'll have to take the serpentine belt off to get the A/C belt loose, but it's a pretty easy and straightforward process.

Yeah, that's where I'd expect to find it but it's not there... On my 02 tahoe and 00 ls1 camaro it's under the bottom center of the belt betweeen the crank & ac pulley. I don't see it on the truck. I see the bolt holes where it should be. The belt seems properly tensioned but I'm not sure on the setup. Can anyone with a GMT-900 take a look? I'll go take a pic...

I'll have to double check but....It might not have one,GM started using "stretching" belts on some applications where you actually stretch the belt over the pulleys using a special installation tool.

Well, that's one way to fix a common squeek issue. :)

Yep...They started this a couple years ago on some applications,It was going to be used in more applications for the '09 model-year.

I'm not sure I like the sound of that concept. :)

I do! As a Design Engineer, I hate fWONking around designing in tensioners. This could make my job easier.
