Rear Housing Swaps

im having trouble finding a rear housing that is wide enough for the new model trucks. the 10 in my silverado is not strong enough for the power im going to run. but i dont like the price tag that goes with a custom built 12 bolt (and not lookin to get that serious). any body know some shortcuts to get a 12bolt to replace a stock 10bolt. i can move spring perches and shock mounts (perks of being a welder)

I noticed that the new silverados come with a better axle set up. possible to swap one from there? pro's and cons?

any info appreciated thanx kyle...

10bolt 33 splines can be made damn near bulletproof. You would have to be doing some serious hooking up to break one with a good locker in it. (something far better than the Grenade 80) Detroit locker comes to mind.

lookin at about 500 ft/lbs out of an ls6. with 33x12.5 tires. every drive train shop ive talked to says the 10 wont last long under that kinda stress. i can truss the housing but will the diff/axles/bearings be able to hold up. i can afford the replace with better after market stuff if it will take the heat :driving:

I would find a 14 bolt 9.5" rear end, those were on a lot of 1/2 ton-light 3/4 ton 1500 trucks 88-99...A buddy of mine has a 91 Sierra 2500LD with 6 lug rear 14 bolt, has disc brakes also.

That too, but seeing as he has a GMT-800 I thought something from the 400 series might also fit better.

He said he's a welder, so I was thinking more along the lines of a nice new axle. :D

yeah i can move all the mounts where ever i want, would rather keep it simple if possible. mostly worried about the width and end plate compatibility. shortening tubes is not that expensive but longer ones are. my press at work is not long enough to press in axle tubes. mine is 64-1/2 across plate to plate. like the idea of a newer rear cause they seem to come with factory lockers. a 14 bolt seems a bit heavy but good suggestion for a off raod application.

anyone done a swap from a new silverado yet? or can you give the measurements for your leaf/shock mounts and over all width. would rather find a bolt in if possible. gm likes to say they changed things and didnt lol. example: my truck has a console out of an avalanche in it right now ;)

The 9.5" 14 bolt isn't that heavy, weight wise...My buddy's running 33s with a V6 and 3.73 gears, open rear end on his GMC 2500LD...It'll still get up and go.

where did your friend get the six lug axles? if its a bolt in it is worth ordering the axles. i hear alot about yukon axles but never see any for sale lol. granted the leaf perch and shock mounts are the same, that seems an easy enough answer. ill call afew 14s for sale and ask them for dimensions. thanx.

It came stock on it far as I know, his fronts are 6 lug also...

They may not fit a newer truck though, I know I was close to biting the bullet on one off a 96 but when I measured my axle and his it was like 6 inches too short (the '96 axle). I was pretty pissed considering it was a steal at 100 bucks, same gears n all.

yep the 90 models are all 56" and some change pending model. i am yet to see a 6 lug 14 bolt that is stock. they are all 8 lug. think your friend got lucky and found a modded rear...search continues...

Next time I see him I will get some pics of his setup and see if I can find the axle code in his glovebox...It is slightly possible that someone swapped out the rear end as he is not the original owner and got the truck with like 50-60k on it...Now it has a little over 260k on a new rebuilt motor...But I know one of the members here also did a 14 bolt swap on a 1500, I think he goes by Chevanator or something like that.

The other odd thing is his rear brakes are disc, and every other one I've been able to find is drum...

would be appreciated. measurements are still the key. the 56" rears are way out of wheel spacer territory. cant make up 5" on each side without adverse wear on the bearings.

the disc/drum is not an issue. i can fix that in an hour. changing end plates is no big deal.

my delema has allways been that gm made the 10 bolts so Fin wide. the 12 and 14 are allways shorter. thats y i was hoping the new trucks would provide an improvement, cause ive researched all the earlier models to no avail.

so short of gettin run out of the chevy dealer for pulling a tape measure on the new trucks like some kinda crazy nerd, im tryin to find a 07+ in the junk yard.

ill post if i find a solution. till then hope this helps afew ppl. i cant be the only one not happy with a peg leg gutless truck. i might hit up the track racers and see if they have any clues.

    • Getting greedy...   The AC pump has been replaced at least once per service records, and it's been recharged twice since 2018 or so, in approximately 2 year intervals between those charges.   It was done at the same shop...clearly they were enjoying the revenue of recharging the system periodically versus actually tracking down and fixing the leak. I learned that the owner was 88 years old when she passed in 2023, so maybe they assumed only a temporary fix was needed anyway.   The system is basically empty now, the compressor spins freely, so I'm guessing it "just needs a recharge".   I vacuumed it down, and it has basically held overnight. Doesn't appear to leak under vacuum, check! So it must leak under pressure. I don't have a way to pressurize the system and pressurizing it with shop air wouldn't be great for the air dryer (which is probably toast anyway?)   The dryer (accumulator? I'm not an AC expert) has a Schrader valve, but the high side has an old ball-type valve, which are notorious for leaking. It's clearly had schmutz blown out of it at one point because the line/area next to the valve is coated old black crud, which I assume is AC refrigerant residue/oil, or maybe even dirty dye. I think I'll roll the dice and replace the valves. I have a black light around here somewhere so I'll find it and shine it around the engine bay in the dark to see if there's any dye.   I can't think of another way to track down the leak other than injecting some dye (if it doesn't have any) and having it charged up. We can't buy R134a off the shelf here anymore, so I'll run it up to Jiffy Lube and have them do it. I think I have a coupon. At the very least, the charge should last long enough for a year or two, according to history. I think this truck will be long gone by then. But cold AC is a selling point.
    • Got the truck back today.  Called them yesterday to get an update, and miraculously my truck is finished?!?! The $13k out the door was complete bullshit!  Ended up being over $14k.  They added some bullshit service bulletin that I cant even find, where they replaced my radiator without telling me or asking me, and charging me for it.  Need to do more research into it, cause they leaked the first delivered radiator was ran over by FedEX.  Sounds like bullshit to me. 2.5 Months for an engine swap, which ended up being remanufactured, not new; ****ing ridiculous.  Brakes are squishy as hell, not sure if its from sitting.  Will give a couple days to see it that figures it self out.  GAVE IT BACK TO ME WITH 1 GALLON OF GAS!  Just filled the tank the day before drop off, more bullshit.  My dash cam SD card was formatted, not really much I can do about that. 3 year, 100k GM warranty at least.  Time to sell it and say **** off to GM.  Bad experience.  Cant wait for the survey email to come through.  Overpriced Raptor R, here I come!
    • If I forget the phone in the truck, and forget the truck in the phone, and reconnect.  It works great for the day.  Truck sits overnight, and the next day is a no go.  It will connect Android Auto via usb cable, but not bluetooth.   Ive tried Everything in this thread so far, and nothing works for more than a day.   I think I might have to go to the dealer and have them flash the pcm.   thanks for all the suggestions guys. 👍
    • 2022 2500HD Crew Z71 Duramax single alternator.  Recently had the primary (water pump / fan) belt tensioner pulley bearing to fail while hundreds of miles from home of course the plastic pulley melted and belt shredded which took out some wiring. Found a replacement tensioner assembly and belt to continue now would like to find a replacement for just the pulley and bearing to have a spare assembly in case of a repeat, the rest of the tensioner is fine. Has anybody here found a correct replacement part for just the pulley and bearing? Any help is appreciated.
    • +1 for the 3.0   Perfect for 1500 pickup towing duties.   Perfect engine for a 1500 pickup period. Huge torque at stunningly low RPM makes it feel a lot lighter than it is. The fuel mileage is insane for a tall and heavy 1500... 30+ on the highway. Mid 20's around town.   It's probably not perfect if you bought a 6.2 for the braaaaaaapppppp V8 noises and wrapping it out to 6k. The LZ0 acts and sounds like a small turbo diesel and there's nothing you can do to make a small turbo diesel sound like a big one, and you can't make an inline diesel sound like a V8 diesel/big Duramax. It's a different driving experience altogether.   Drive one, I think you'll like it, though...
