1990 Chevy 1500 4x4-anything I Should Know?

I found this truck on Kijiji for $700.00 and it seems pretty good, although I'm just a teenager eager to buy his first vehicle.

I went to it and talked to the owner today and the major issues with it are:

-needs new windshield

-needs new rear brakes

-needs new steering column

It has about 250k on it and it has been used for daily travel and occasional hunting trips.

Here is the link: http://stcatharines.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehic...QAdIdZ126686259

If anyone would have any advice to give me it would be greatly appreciated.

I understand it's going to take some money to fix but I want a project, but not a lost cause.

Thanks.

Make sure first that all the fluids are descent. Especially the tranny fluid! If it is brown and burnt then the tranny is prob on its way out also check the front end for worn parts before you buy as that can get very expensive and listen to the fuel pump and see if its loud and whiny cuz people laugh but usually on these gm trucks the louder the better, when they get quiet it is usually a warning sign. Those are some of the most costly repairs i can think of on those trucks. As a voice of experience. Good Luck

The way I look at it, EVERYONE pays the same price for a vehicle!

If you buy a high mileage used vehicle for very little money, you will spend thousands fixing things.

If you buy a low mileage newer vehicle, there will be few repairs, but you will have big payments.

Either way you pay!

With that said, I have no problem buying used with high mileage because I know how to fix things myself. But when buying such a vehicle, I expect to have to repair/replace just about everything mechanical. Each time something breaks, I say "Time for another truck payment!"

So just expect things to break and need servicing.

Other than that, why does the steering column need to be replaced? Do you know how to fix this? Or would you have to pay a shop to fix it?

It's everything when you are buying an old vehicle. It can cost several times the purchase price to make one reliable. many times you are far better off spending a little more than you are comfortable with and getting something a little fresher.

90 model with 250K is going to be a money pit.

I can vouch for this. I took extremely good care of my '91 K1500 and at 238K miles I felt like I was sinking cash into it every weekend just to keep it running. It was always something. Ultimately, that's what told me it was time to go get a new one.

There MUST be a reason that we don't see any 90 year old men playing linebacker for the Packers.

Browns maybe....
