Paint Chip On My Roof.

Recommended Posts

When i was washing my truck over the weekend i noticed a big chip on the roof towards the windshield. when i say big its about the size of an eraser head. must have been hit by a stone . anyway its chipped down to the metal and beginning to rust. i threw some wax on it as a quick fix but what should i do for a permanent fix?

Clean out the wax... and get some touch up paint on it. Build it up with a few coats of paint to help level it out. I got one last month on the edge of one of my doors. It must have taken a big rock.

Clean out the wax and rust, build up several layers of touch-up paint until the new paint sits above the factory paint. Grab some 2000 grit and slowly wet sand it until it's smooth. Polish. Done!

sounds like a plan. What should I use to remove the rust? can the touch up paint go right onto the bare metal or do i need a primer?

oh and when i said i put wax on it its car wax not candle wax.

Carefully use some sand paper or a wire brush. Some places sell a small, stiff brush designed exclusively for removing rust, etc. from small areas for touch up. Some touch up bottles come with a wire brush. I guess it all depends on what you end up with.

Just make sure to let the paint dry for a few days before sanding it. You want it to be good and cured. I've done this on many vehicles and generally you can't tell the repair was even done unless you really get close. On your roof, no one will ever know.

Make sure to use a good solvent to get rid of it all, regardless of what kind.

It's expensive but just get it from the dealer.

To remove the rust in a small spot, you can use a sharp awl or even a small flat screwdriver. This way you do not damage the paint outside the affected area. And yes, you need to prime the bare metal first, then use the top coat.

Get your paint code from the glove box sticker and search using that rather than the name.
